Chapter 5

Gunner

I spend the next morning in the garage working on a couple of bikes, glad for the distraction. I’m not scheduled to see Mari until later today, and it’s taking every ounce of my effort not to hop on my bike and hunt her down.

Seeing her yesterday with her family was eye-opening. As someone who didn’t grow up with a lot of money, I always assumed it made things better. But the Torres family is just as fucked up as any other, and watching her parents try to cut down Mari and make her just as miserable as they are… Well, it was almost more than I could stand.

But it also made me appreciate her even more. Her compassion. Her independence. Her fire. Those things aren’t easy to come by without family support. Something I know all too well.

I finish up in the garage around lunchtime and head to my room in the clubhouse to hit the shower. I’ve lived here for years even though members usually move out and get their own places eventually, even if it’s just somewhere else on the grounds, but I like being here, right in the middle of things. For better or worse, I never did have that family unit. Now that I have a houseful of brothers, I don’t want to miss a minute of the chaos.

She doesn’t answer, but instead sits up, pulls a folded piece of paper out of her purse, and hands it to me.
