Twenty-Eight

Gabe felt his first twinge of unprovoked anger when he was getting ready to call Tom Jackson. He and Yvonne had discussed his plan of attack, and she fully agreed it was the best approach. Especially since Tom seemed to be in competition with Winston Purdue, a guy who ran a similar charity to fight cancer that involved biking instead of running.

Gabe lowered the burner phone in his hand and leaned against the cool glass wall in the ATM booth, where he had gone to make the call. It was near his school and he had picked up on the fact that it was rarely populated during school hours. It made a good place for a clandestine phone call then. He closed his eyes and calmly assessed his insides. Had that twinge been what he had thought it was or something else? It would be a little early if it was; only five weeks had passed since he killed the businessman. Based on previous experiences, he should be okay for another three weeks at least. Maybe he had just imagined the twinge. He couldn’t tell either way. He shrugged and got back to his phone business. His mother had dug up Tom’s direct number at work for him, and Gabe had programmed it into his latest burner to make the call as smoothly as possible.

Two rings went through before Tom cheerfully answered. “Phoenix Capital, this is Tom.”

Gabe cleared his throat, making his voice as deep as he could.

Winston Purdue, the founder of Cycle for Survival, approached us last week, but my client would rather meet with you first.”

“Purdue reached out to you? Really?” Tom sounded surprised. And excited.

“Yes, his brother works with my client’s nephew, whose aunt just died of lung cancer. So he learned about my client through the grapevine so to speak. Purdue made a call personally to discuss. My client likes the idea, but after doing some research, he discovered your charity, which is focused on curing leukemia. Because his granddaughter’s death hit him particularly hard, he wants to dedicate his efforts on fighting leukemia specifically.”

“Oh. That is so virtuous and kind of him, Mr…?”

“Collins. Luke Collins.”

“Ah, yes. Mr. Collins. Yes, when someone very close to you dies, it makes it a little bit easier to endure when you put all your efforts into a cause to make the world better.”

“Those are my client’s thoughts exactly. Can we set up a meeting between you and him then? He’d prefer to meet you at his New York office once he’s in town. Would that be okay?”

“Sure, that sounds good. When were you thinking?”

“Could you make it this Sunday afternoon? I
