Between the goosebumps and my nerves my hands shook so hard I had to close the book. “Do you think I should read this?”

“I think you need to. As her mother, I’m sure she never intended for me to see it.” Gramma stood and brushed the tears off her cheeks. “Well, we need to hurry, or we’ll be late for our flight. Do you have room in your backpack, or shall I pack the box?”

“I’ll make room.”

As we pulled away in the cab, I looked back at the soft pink house, rainwater still dripping from the iron balcony. I could live here.

We checked our bags and waited in the long security line. Gramma took off her jewelry, shoes, and jacket to avoid the buzz of the security gate. I placed my backpack on the conveyor belt, walked easily through the metal detector, and waited at the other side for Gramma to put herself back together and for my backpack to come out.

The guard stopped the belt when my backpack appeared on his screen. He stared at it for several long moments and then moved it forward and searched through the contents. Finally, he pulled the wooden box out and placed it back on the belt for another trip through the machine. “What’s in there?” he asked.

“An old diary and some personal items,” Gramma said.

He stopped the belt and stared closely at the monitor. “Could you open this please?” I took the box from him and worked the latch open. The guard removed the diary and photo, leaving the fuzzy hair at the bottom. Then, he placed it back on the belt.

“What’s the problem? We found this box today. It belonged to my late daughter.”

By now the line grew long behind us. The guard moved us to a side table where we stood while he continued to study the box. After the third screening, he gave it back. We repacked everything and checked in. While we waited for our flight home, we studied the thick dark wood.

Once we boarded the plane and settled in, I opened the diary. Mom’s handwriting was sloppy, but I read until my eyes stung.

Dear Diary,

Mom is freaked out. I keep getting goosebumps even though it’s hot and muggy outside and she says it’s because I have some “special powers.” Yeah right. She’s nuts. Except for that, my birthday was pretty good. I got the new jacket I wanted. I can’t wait until it’s cold enough to wear it.

Love, Marina.
