Chapter Nine

“What about this one?” I pointed at the fourth crib of the afternoon. We were at a big box store that specialized in infant furniture and other baby items we’d need. So far, we were only shopping for one set of items. We hadn’t yet figured out the living situation. Sure, I could look up apartments, but then I’d have to face the reality of looking up apartments. Or reality of my feelings for Derek and how I wondered how I’d live without him by my side each night.

“I like it,” Derek said. “I want to run a check on it, though, to make sure there are no recalls.”

“It wouldn’t be in the store if there were,” I protested.

“Maybe, but we should at least look to see how other people like it.”

“It’s a crib. What’s there to complain about? The crib is fine. It looks sturdy. Put a mattress in it, set the baby down, we’re done.”

“There’s more to it than that,” Derek said. “We can’t pick just any crib. It has to be perfect.”

“Well, if we’re only picking out perfect items, we’re going to be here for a while. And also, we’re going to go broke. Both of us are city employees, you know.”

“Yeah,” he said. “That’s true.”

In the end, we put it on the list of items we’d probably end up getting. We were just browsing right now anyway. We hadn’t yet selected a theme for the nursery or a room. Derek had one guest room and a workout room, but I was currently living in the guest room, though I wasn’t actually staying there most of the time. Or ever. I kept my clothes in that closet, though, because if I kept my stuff next to Derek’s in his closet, then there would be no denying the ways in which our relationship had changed.

Today was the first time in a while that Derek had let me out of the house for something other than work. I think he sensed I was about to go stir crazy if I had to stay inside any longer.

“What kind of color scheme should we do?” I asked. “The guest room is painted a nice blue, but the office is beige. Guess it doesn’t really matter. We can make anything go with those colors, right?”

Derek shrugged. “That’s not really my area of expertise.”

I snorted. “Me neither.”

We browsed around the store a while longer, and I got overwhelmed by just how much stuff there was for children. For example, an entire twenty-by- eight-foot display of bottles. Just bottles. Different sizes, nipple shapes, colors. I couldn’t even fathom how I was going to choose between them. I guess I would add it to my list of things to research while I was laid up.

“Do these things come with manuals?” I stared at the wall of diapers and all of the table, pails, and other junk that went along with them.

“What? The diaper pail things?”

“No, babies.”

“I don’t think so,” Derek said. “Pretty sure it’s a learn-as-you-go situation.
