SETTING THE PHOTO ON the bed next to me, I reached for a tissue. My body felt weary. Wiping my eyes and blowing my nose, I felt I’d snapped that picture just yesterday, and at the same time, a lifetime ago. I got up and walked to the bathroom, splashed my face with water, and returned to the bed. Resting back on my pillow, I pressed the photo against my chest, then lifted it staring into it. In the background you could see the cliff. Flowerpot held some of the best memories of me and Jax. Every year after that, that we were together, we’d gone there, both camping and volunteering, always managing to make it to the cliff. It was our spot, our secret hideaway.

I tried to imagine an alternative version of the past lonely twelve years and what it would have been like to wake up to his warmth every day. To hold him as tightly as I had that day on the cliff. To live a life without lies, like an osprey.

I got up and went back to the dresser. In the opposite corner of the drawer were cards Jax had given me over the years. Remembering one he’d sent right after we’d been to Flowerpot, I reached in and grabbed it.

I want you to know what a huge part of my life you have become over the past month. It’s probably the best it has ever been. Sometimes we don’t always take the time to say thanks for all of the little things we do. I want you to know how much I do appreciate the sacrifices you’ve made. I will always love you,

Love, Jax

My upper lip quivering, I placed the card back in its place along with the photo.

God, I prayed, if you let Jax come back to me, I promise to live the life that you set out for me. I promise to honour you and myself. I promise never to let him go again. But please, please let him come back to me.

My phone rang. It was Amelia.
