Chapter 22
Disorder is the new order
Ramirez
She’s running somewhere, out in the woods. It’s dark—quiet. Her legs move fast, thorns snapping like whips around her ankles, but she keeps on running. She can’t stop—no direction, no idea where she’s going—but she trusts her instincts, she trusts those shivers.
She feels the danger.
It’s like I can hear her panting. She’s screaming into the night. In my head.
Help, help!
Someone laughs. They are right behind her, all around her. It’s a hunt, that’s what it is.
They let the prey go. She’s free to run in the woods, but it’s just a game, a sick twisted little game. They are playing with her.
She’s going nowhere: the first house is a hundred miles from there. No one can hear her scream; no one can come and save her.
I toss and turn, feel drops of sweat forming around my temples.
Open your fucking eyes, you are dreaming.
The thought is weak and distant.
I’m in the woods. I’m there with her—a silent witness. My mind shows me what it wants, what must have happened to her.
Her.
Francesca.
I sink my nails into the sheets.
She falls to the ground; someone’s hit her.
No!
Stop!
They hit her again.
I can’t make out their features; they’re as dark as the night. They have no face, no voice.
The sound of slaps, the tearing of cloth, her dress in pieces, her candid, soft skin exposed... They are touching her, hands everywhere. She screams, once, but then they hit her again and again, until she has no voice left in her.
They keep going, on and on, until she’s been hurt so much she breathes quietly, barely. She stops moving.
NO!
Wake the fuck up!
I’m out of it, out of the nightmare and out of breath, in bed, naked.
It takes me a few moments to figure out where I am, what day it is, who the fuck I am again.
Ramirez De la Crux—just me and one of the very last brain cells left in me.
I’m destroying myself, not so slowly anymore. I’m losing control of what’s real and what’s not.
I hold my head, my knees up to my chest. I feel my eyes pulsing; for a moment everything goes blurry.
Breathe motherfucker, breathe.
My fingers dig through my damp hair.
Light shines through the shutters. It’s morning, or at least it’s daytime, and I’m in bed, naked, no sign of Fiamma. She must have left in the middle of the night; I have no recollection of when.
It’s hard to face the truth, isn’t it, Fiamma?
I think of her moaning in my bed, hands pushing me inside her deep.
It’s hard to admit you were wrong.
“You like fucking with me, don’t you?” I’d whispered in her ears, her body spasming, my dick still inside her.
She’ll be back.
I look around, seeing nothing of hers left behind. No sign of her.
No sign of my nightmares either.
Fucking drugs; fucking hallucinations.
I get up, putting on the first pair of trousers I find on the chair.
Whatever happened last night was just physical, was just business, and it was fun.
Whatever the hell I just saw in that dream, whatever the hell my head just showed me, it wasn’t real.
