Once in the car, Dad hummed a tuneless melody, then stopped short.
She looked over at him.
He tapped the steering wheel with a disjointed pattern, a clear sign of discomfort. âWell, it looks to me as if youâre really starting to enjoy high school.â
She shifted in her seat. The jeans, new and crisp, rubbed against her skin like wooden planks. Why hadnât it occurred to her to wash them first?
âOh, yeah? What makes you say that?â
âYou just seem, oh, I dunno. More interested in doing things with your friends, lately.â
âOh.â
Dad glanced over at her. âYouâre being more social, you know? I donât think youâve ever asked for a ride somewhere to see friends on a Saturday night, thatâs all.â
âReally? But Iâm pretty sure Iâve done things.â
âOf course, youâve done thingsââ
âItâs not like Iâve been sitting around at home turning into a mushroom,â she said, her cheeks burning.
âI know that, honey, but in the past, youâve done more in the way of . . . reading . . . library events, not so much outings with friends, you know what I mean?â
âOr a hermit.â
Why was this embarrassing her so? Dad was acting like heâd caught her out doing something bad.
âItâs okay,â he assured her hastily. âItâs okay.â
She sat back, dumbfounded.
Is he right?
âYou look nice,â Dad said.
âOh, um, thanks.â
What was up with Dad? When did he ever notice what she wore? Although truthfully, a blind man couldnât fail to notice what she wore tonight.
He tapped the wheel. âItâs good to see you . . . breaking out of your shell.â
âWhatever, Dad.â
He pulled up in front of the Daily Grind on Kirkwood and idled the engine. âYou got enough money, sport?â
She grinned. âSure, Dad. Mom gave me a twenty.â
âThat gonna be enough?â
âWell, of course, Dad.â
He reached into his wallet. âHere.â
âNo, Dad, Iâm good.â
He pressed a twenty into the palm of her hand. âLook, for just in case.â
âUm, okay, thanks?â
âFor just in case.â
In case of what?
Dad cleared his throat. âAll right, youâll call when youâre ready to come home?â
âYep. How late can I stay out?â
âI know itâs not a school night, but no later than ten.â
Mona pulled her cell out of her pocket. Six-fifteen. Ten oâclock seemed ages away.
âOn second thought, make it eleven.â
Eleven. Wow.
So sweet of Dad to think sheâd be having so much fun sheâd need to extend a ten oâclock curfew. All she really wantedâand expectedâfrom the evening, was to get through it in one piece without someone making fun of her. And if at least one boy looked at herâand it didnât even need to be Esau, it could be anyoneâthe evening would be a total win.
Just one boy.
It wasnât expecting too much, was it?
Yes, yes it is.
She doubted itâd take her till ten oâclock for all this excitement to happen. Now, someone like Mindy would probably be having fun all night long.
Mona just wanted to be included.
âAll right, Dad. Iâll call when Iâm ready to come home.â
He pecked her on the cheek. âHave fun, honey.â
âSure,â she said, climbing out of the car.
