"Dessert, ladies?" The waiter hovered over us. Lexie flashed a beguiling smile at him. When he was gone, she leaned forward.

"You can paint your ass off at Bennington. Lots of painters go there."

Across the street, a hansom cab stopped in front of the Metropolitan. "I want to go to school in New York,"

"But that's too close to Eleanor," she pouted.

"Well, Eleanor's not my guardian," I said, puzzled.

Lexie's knee pressed mine harder. "If you came to Bennington, we could have so much fun. I could sing and you could paint and we could put on musicals together. We ..." Her eyes brightened. "By the way, you're going to design the sets for the Music Club show."

"Me?"

"Why not?" Lexie lit a cigarette and exhaled slowly, staring at me like a cat.

"I've never designed a stage set."

"You'll learn. Alice will help you. I'll help you. Miss Jonas will help you."

"I'm not in the Music Club, Lexie. That would be crony-ism or something." Actually, I had always wanted to be in the Music Club, but I'd never thought of working on the set.

"We'll make you an honorary member." The top button of Lexie's silk blouse was unbuttoned, and I could see the pale skin of her neck. "You're the best artist in the school. It makes perfect sense." Lexie leaned forward, her breasts rising. "After you've designed the sets and we've worked together, you'll want to go to Bennington and put on shows there too. You better apply right away."

I stared at her. "I thought you were going to study opera and stuff."
