Chapter 14

Still chained to the cold metal bed, Kayci awoke to a commotion loud enough to rouse her. Her blurry vision revealed two figures fighting. One crashed into the table across from her. Bottles shattered. Tools slammed to the floor.

"What have you done to her?!"

Adrian. Hope filled her. She raised herself onto an elbow. Ignored the heavy, cold chains weighing down her weak arms. She tried to focus on the figures.

"Cassius, listen to me. It's working. Once I'm through…her blood…could make you immortal."

"You and my grandfather's insane antics will get us all killed. She's the Covenant leader! You've nearly killed her in your crazed attempt at playing God."

Dr. Allis choked for air as Cass squeezed his throat. "It's a damn good thing I found her."

His colossal body shifted from man to werewolf. His head lurched. His fangs pierced. She heard Dr. Allis's last breath before his jugular was torn, his head ripped from his body.

She heard the release of the chains above her. Felt the weight of them being lifted off her wrists. She was raised into a sitting position, lifted like a feather into solid bare arms.

"Kat, it's me, Cassius." A large, affectionate hand rubbed along her face. Stroked her hair. Tilted her head toward his neck. His virile pulse beat just beneath her lips.

"Drink. My blood will heal you. It will counteract the venom."

Her ravenous hunger consumed her. She curled her lip, extracted her fangs. Her arms gripped his muscular half-naked frame as she gulped the luscious blood from him. His hand held the nape of her neck firmly. He stood concrete as a statue, unaffected by her ravenous need. By her rough draw of his blood.

She gorged until most of the pain dissipated. Until her eyesight cleared and the sounds of footfalls from the floor above filled her ears. She released him gently. Licked his delicious blood from her lips.

He stared down at her, still holding her in his arms. His beautiful hazel eyes filled with sorrow.

"You'll need more. I'll give it to you." He cupped her face, running his thumb across her cheek. "I'm sorry he did this to you."

He lifted her gently, placing one arm under her leg and the other around her back, removing her from the cold, hard metal bed.
