* * * *

With the way things had ended between them the previous evening, Lex was afraid Wil hadn't merely walked out of his apartment, but out of his life altogether. If he had just walked away, he wasn't the man Lex thought him to be and, for that reason alone, it would be just as well. But when he looked out one of the back windows on his way downstairs and saw lights in the apartment over the garage, he felt a quick surge of relief. He and Wil could talk during the drive into town and, with a little luck, by the time they arrived at the store, everything between them would be fine.

Unfortunately, both his hopes and his relief were short-lived. When Rose came into the morning room with his breakfast, she said, "Wil says he's sorry, but he won't be able to drive you into town this morning."

"Why's that. Is he sick or something?"

Or is he packing his stuff in readiness to leave town?

Rose shrugged her ample shoulders. "He didn't say exactly, sir, but I got the impression he's feeling a bit under the weather. Probably a touch of the flu or one of these other bugs that's making the rounds. If you like, I can ask Bert to fill in," she said, referring to her husband who'd worked for Lex's family for years in the dual capacity of gardener and general handyman. "I'm sure he won't mind."

"No, it's okay. Just call me a taxi."

Lex spent most of the day trying to decide what he should do if Wil was planning to quit his job, but afraid whatever he did would be wrong. If Wil had already gone, there was nothing he could do. If he was sick or sulking, there wasn't much he could do about that either, other than leave him alone to get over it. By the time the store closed for the day, he was sure of only one thing--he should have followed old Abner's advice about the dangers of getting involved with the help.

By ignoring his advice, he now had to deal with what promised to become an untenable situation unless he found a solution, fast. If Wil decided to leave, there was no way Lex could make him stay, even though he couldn't think of a single reason why Wil would want to quit his job just like that. Lex had done nothing for which he needed to apologize or ask Wil's forgiveness. They'd had a heated discussion during which Wil had outright criticized the way Lex was raised, and Lex had wound up feeling angry and hurt. His family's parenting methods and the values they'd chosen to instill in their only child might be a little outdated, but they were none of Wil's damn business, so if anyone was entitled to an apology, it was Lex.

The following morning, when Rose appeared with his breakfast and another message to the effect Wil was still unable to drive him, Lex again inquired if she'd been able to find out what the problem was.
