Jay had a bounce in his step as he walked from the restaurant back to his hotel. He was relieved Diego didnât want to end what they were doing. And despite Jayâs need to get naked tonight, he wanted to know what had upset Diego. And kill it. If it was killable. If not, heâd find some other way to banish it. Diego was meant to smile, not frown.
Rolling his eyes at himself, he glanced up at the clear sky. When did he turn into such a sap? Or had he always been one, and the army just repressed it? Couldnât say. Maybe Diego would let him fuck away whatever was upsetting him. That worked just as well, if not better, than the killing plan.
About to enter his hotel, he got that strange prickle on the back of his neck again. He paused and shuffled around as if searching for something in his pockets. Meanwhile, he hid behind his shades and scanned the crowded sidewalks. He thought he caught a glimpse of one of the women from earlier at the pyramids⦠maybe Evie? But then the great mass of humanity swallowed her up. It was a blessing and a curse that Mexico City was a metropolitan area with folks from all ethnicities filling the city. Since arriving, heâd heard German and French and Dutch spoken as well as English and Spanish. Frustrated and on edge, Jay hurried into his hotel and up to his room. He almost contacted Diego to tell him not to come or to choose another place for them to meet. But he feared Diego asking why and then heâd be forced to lie or to scare the poor man with the truth. Whatever the truth was. And if Diego offered his own home, that would put him in too much danger.
If Jay knew anything about hunting, it was that they wouldnât make a move until they were sure there wouldnât be witnesses. If it was, in fact, the trio that were stalking him then they were in the observation and intel-gathering phase. Would they try to use Diego against him? Kidnap him and then demand a trade?
Jay frowned as he set down the food and made sure his curtains were closed. Kidnapping Diego would be too messy. He was an established local, a businessman with a large family. Heâd be missed. Jay, as a nobody tourist, could disappear easier.
But what could they possibly want from him? Was this about his time in the army? Were they spies? Did they work for a cartel? His gun purchase hadnât been legal but it also hadnât crossed the line into cartel business. Heâd only been in Mexico City a single weekend, who had he pissed off during that time? Someone attached to Diego?
No. Jay shook his head. That made no sense. His gut told him that Diego was trustworthy. With such a short acquaintance, it was all he had to go on.
The beep of a text and a jaunty knock at his door had Jay smiling.
