The ballroom was almost too bright, with chandeliers stacked high with candles and torches beaming golden light onto everyone below.

A dizzying mixture of excitement, lust, anger, and a tad bit of fear wafted toward Halston in waves.

There were too many emotions amongst the scores of guests to count, and Halston could feel them all. The fear and rage that was well hidden amongst those around him was intoxicating. He resisted the urge to approach those who embodied this low level of emotion, and exploit it.

This new way of being, feeling, and reacting was determined to take him lower—farther from the light. But, he would resist.

It was an itch within his heart space that he couldn’t scratch. His skin tightened and grew hot at the urge.

“Alright there, Halston?” Evina asked, glancing at him as they made their way through the crowd and toward where the underground lord of warlocks awaited.

He was so much more than that. If there was a crown, it would be placed upon Radoslav’s head, and there would never be an heir, for that man had discovered magic dark enough to extend his life alongside the immortal vampires.

Halston, however, knew where that life lead. He’d watched as Nicolai paid for his cheating of death.

“I’m fine,” he said, composing himself. He nodded ahead. “You two lead the way. I’ll follow.”

“Very well,” she said, and took Lexi by the arm, linking.

As expected, Evina and Lexi drew the attention of several groups of finely dressed men. Their eyes followed the two vampire women, without a clue of just how dangerous they were.

Halston followed behind, allowing them to hold the gazes of most of the room. Even the women paused their conversations to stare at them.

Pieces of conversations reached Halston’s ears. Whispers of inquiries as to who Evina and Lexi were, spiteful comments, and proclamations of intent to pursue all came to him. He grinned.

Good luck with that.

Then, he caught a glimpse of Jax and Radoslav toward the back of the room. They were surrounded by a harem of beautiful women who were deeply intrigued and devoted to them, until Halston approached.

“Ah,” Radoslav said. He opened his arms. “Get in here, Halston. How long has it been?”

Halston and Radoslav were not friends, and he couldn’t bring himself to pretend.

He stopped a few feet before Radoslav, regarded the man before him with a cool expression, and gave nothing more than a nod.

“Radoslav,” Halston said. “Seems we are brought together by extreme circumstances.”

Radoslav lowered his arms, but held the same false smile on his face.

He appeared to be no more than thirty-ish, with dark, shoulder-length hair and dark, almost black eyes. He had a perfectly maintained and trimmed beard, and wore a sleek maroon suit.

“It does seem that way,” he said, with a nod. “Who would have ever thought I’d have a Netherworld general—oh wait. Former Netherworld general in my home, asking for my help.”

Halston’s jaw tightened. “I wouldn’t go that far. This deal is quite balanced. Equal.”

Radoslav looked into Halston’s eyes for a moment, then grinned, and chuckled.
