Chapter 8
Loretta placed the small, furry bundle of energy on the passenger seat. Loco, the dark-haired Affenpinscher on loan courtesy of Uncle Ichabod, who had been vague about the dog’s owner, hopped on the seat and bounced up and down.
Loretta, not one to look a gift horse, or in this case, a gift dog in the mouth, gratefully took the dog and headed for the van.
Lacy climbed in the back seat. “Why does the mutt get my seat?” she whined.
Loretta ignored her sister and waited for Savannah to ease into the seat next to Lacy. “I hope this works,” Savannah fretted.
If it didn’t work, Loretta didn’t have a “Plan B.” This was it. Call it a premonition. Call it a hunch, or call it wishful thinking, she had a feeling today they were going to crack the case.
Uncle Ichabod was the last to the party and squeezed in between Lacy and Savannah in the rear seat. He was wearing an oversized trench coat. Loretta had never seen the coat before.
The pockets of the jacket bulged and Loretta wondered what Uncle Ichabod had up his sleeve, or in this case, inside his jacket. She figured she would find out soon enough as she backed out of the driveway and turned onto the main road.
“Let’s go over the plan again,” Loretta said as she glanced nervously in the rearview mirror.
“I’m going to walk the dog, pretending to be the owner,” Lacy said.
“I’m going to hang out near the park’s exit to make sure Loco isn’t snatched and taken out of the park,” Savannah said.
“I’m going to pretend to read my newspaper on the park bench near the center where I have an unobstructed view of the entire park,” Uncle Ichabod chimed in.
Loretta nodded. “And I’m going to watch from the van, just in case the dog napper shows up, somehow makes it through our line of defense and manages to get out of the park with Loco.”
“I hope this works,” Savannah sighed and her lower lip began to quiver.
“Me too.” Loretta pulled the van into the park’s parking lot. It was early morning, the time of day most of the dog kidnappings had occurred in Glimmer.
If the plan didn’t work and no one showed up, they would have to try again but Loretta had already decided the next sting would be in Pleasant Plantation Estates, near Garth Parrish’s house. Looking back, maybe they should have started there, but it was too late to change the plan now.
Lacy climbed out of the van first, opened the passenger door and reached for Loco’s leash. “C’mon you stupid mutt. Don’t try anything funny,” she warned him.
Loretta grinned. Lacy was not fond of dogs or any animal for that matter. “Be nice to Loco,” she warned her sister. “I’ll be watching.”
Lacy stuck out her tongue, grabbed the dog and slammed the passenger side door. She set Loco on the sidewalk, tugged on his leash and the two of them headed through the park entrance.
“Time to roll!” Uncle Ichabod slipped out of the van.
