Chapter Eleven - Rick

It was late morning, and I sat in my office drifting into a tranquil daydream that loosened my tight shoulder faster than staring at fish in a tank. In my mind, I saw again Hallie’s beautiful face smiling at me before I slipped out of her bed earlier that morning. Her cheeks had been a soft pink, her hair in messy waves, and her clear eyes shined with love.

Closing my eyes, I pictured again my hand gliding slowly down her body treasuring the delicate feel of her smooth skin covered in pale freckles. I brushed her hair out of her face as my lips lowered onto hers, soft and pink. I licked the plump line as she moaned then I turned my head and kissed a hard, pink nipple as her breast slid out from underneath the cotton sheets.

Poor little Axel barked at the door. She bounced out of bed and dashed into the living room scooping him up. Her face shined with joy and there was a lightness to Hallie that I hadn’t noticed before. I was dressed when she came back in. Hallie pressed her naked body against mine. All lush curves from her breasts to her hips on those long marvelous legs. We kissed deeply and I was only able to leave because I knew I’d see her later in the day.

Each morning when I come into the office, I concentrate on my work so I can leave quickly for the hotel. But today, I stared at the fish tank lost in my thoughts of her. The month was coming to an end and what would I do? Hallie thought I was a little guy making sacrifices for her, but in reality, all I needed to do was make a phone call to a subordinate.

Hallie had a gritty image of me as a tough guy raised on the unforgiving streets of the Big Apple like some old movie from the seventies. When I told her I lived uptown, I wondered how far uptown she thought I meant. I had to figure this out before she did.

Leaning back in my chair, I looked down into the street. Up this high, I couldn’t see the cars, just motions of bright lights moving through narrow crevices formed by the tall buildings. I wondered if I had done the right thing. Living as a blue-collar man wasn’t a challenge compared to falling in love.

Oscar strolled into my office holding a manila folder. He better have other things to worry about than if I made a withdrawal from my hefty bank account this month. I tried to keep the bet honest except last night, I did stop by my uptown apartment for a bottle of wine and a good suit before my date. True to habit, Oscar plopped himself down into ‘his’ favorite leather chair in my office and then stared at me in a way that made me feel like he knew too much.

“Oh my God,” he said as I glanced at him.
