“I don’t mind the Vanessa thing,” I said. “I mean, I do, sort of. She’s not… Her and I, we hadn’t been getting along for a while.”

“Right.”

“And I was honestly really glad when she told me that if I went on tour, we were going to stop seeing each other,” I said. “I know it sounds so shitty, but I was honestly thinking that I would never have to deal with her again and I couldn’t wait not to.”

“Sounds like it was a good thing.”

“Yes,” I said, then got even closer to him. “But the reason why is not great.”

“Someone else?”

I nodded, my mouth dry. “Yeah,” I said. I opened my mouth to tell him about the dreams, but I couldn’t bring myself to say anything else.

“Do I know her?”

I licked my dry lips. “Not her,” I said.

He stared at me, but said nothing.

“But you do,” I finally said, desperately trying to fill the silence.

“I know... them?” Charlie said, very slowly.

“Yeah,” I replied, then looked at the venue. “That’s why I’ve been so weird lately.”

He looked me up and down. His jaw hardened for a second, then he nodded. “Avery,” he said. It was more a statement than anything else, but the question was in his eyes. I didn’t want to answer him. I found myself looking away from him and nodding, saying nothing.

“It’s… new,” I said. “I started having these dreams when I realized we were about to go on tour again, and then, I don’t know, self-reflected?”

“Sexuality is—”

“Fluid, I know,” I said, waving my hand in front of my face. “I don’t need a lecture about human sexuality, doctor.”

He smiled, but he looked a little hurt. “That wasn’t what I intended.”

I shook my head. “I know,” I said. “I know, I know. You’re just trying to help and I’m being a total dick.”

“You’re not being a dick,” he said. “You’re just confused.”

I didn’t say anything.

“You are, right?”

“What?”

“Confused,” Charlie said.

I shrugged. “Kind of,” I replied. “I’m more concerned than confused.”

“Why?”

“Because,” I said. “What if I tell him and it just fucks everything up?”

“Wait,” he replied. “You’re going to tell him?”

I shrugged and leaned on the dirty back wall. It was cold and I wanted to go inside, but instantly, I felt like some weight had been lifted off my shoulders. “I’ve been thinking about it,” I said. “But I don’t know. It’s probably not a good idea.”

“He’ll probably be flattered,” Charlie offered after a while.

“Right,” I said. “And what do I do with flattered?”

He shook his head. “I have no idea,” he said. “I have no idea what you’re supposed to do with any of this.”

“That’s exactly my point,” I said, pinching the bridge of my nose. “I have no idea what I’m supposed to do either and it’s freaking me out. Like, if I tell him, do you think he’s going to think I’m making fun of him?”

“Why would he think you’re making fun of him?”

I shrugged and watched my breath gather in front of my face. “I don’t know,” I said.
