To Ronin’s disappointment, I did not get naked and join the festivities last night. Though I had left Iris and Ronin, so I didn’t know and didn’t ask if they had joined the merry nudist bonfire extravaganza.

I hadn’t been in the partying mood. I was thrilled that Iris was back and healthy, with her magic intact, which was more than I could hope for. But my mood was dark and twisty. And the one person I wanted to talk to, the one person who was soothing with just his presence, wasn’t here. Just hearing his voice would have helped, but I couldn’t even speak to him on the phone.

Instead, I was left with a coldness in my heart, a small tear that kept expanding.

I pulled out the stool from the kitchen island next to Iris and sat, my hands wrapped around a coffee mug and my thoughts muddled like my brain was full of cotton balls.

“I nearly had a heart attack when I saw you and Ronin last night,” said Beverly, her face pristine and her makeup flawless. She did not look like someone who’d partied until the early morning hours, more like someone who just came back from a spa retreat for the weekend.

Iris looked over at me. “So did Tessa.”

I took a sip of my coffee. “You did sneak up behind me.”

“You healed so fast,” said a cheery Ruth, whisking a bowl of sand-colored batter against her chest. Hildo sprawled lazily behind her on the counter next to the stove. “Those healers are truly the best in the country.”

“Our healing abilities aided her speedy recovery,” informed Dolores, the only one of the sisters whose eyes were puffy, her long face suggesting a few more hours in bed would have done wonders for her complexion. She pressed her hands onto the island, a pointed look on her face. “Without our quick thinking and superb spell and potion control, she might not be here today. She might be six feet under.”

“Uh, o-kay,” I said, glancing at Iris, who just gave me a shrug like it was no big deal.

“The healers at the Full Moon Medical Center,” continued Dolores, “are your average reversers of magically induced ailments, dabblers of counter-curses and restorative magic practitioners. But we were the true saviors here. We are the magical champions.”

My Aunt Dolores really did have a narcissistic side. I kept my mouth shut. I didn’t want to ruin her moment.

“Yes, thank you all very much,” said Iris, her face flushed as she shifted in her chair. Knowing her, she was probably more upset and embarrassed that her spell hadn’t worked.

Dolores’s dark eyes pinned me from across the island. “But you wouldn’t have needed our help if you had only told us what the two of you were up to.”

She also loved to rub it in.

“You look lovely, Beverly,” I said, wanting to change the subject. “Going somewhere?”

Beverly’s green eyes narrowed. “Lovely? Lovely is a word used on the unattractive female to spare her feelings.” She glanced down at her white blouse and undid one of the top buttons so her cleavage was more exposed.
