19.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” Simone yelled, wielding a block heeled shoe above her head.

“Jesus Christ, you scared the shit out of me.” Maria lowered her arms. She blew out a short sharp breath. Simone hovered the shoe menacingly above her head, staring at Maria with wide eyes and her mouth open. “Please, will you put the shoe down?”

Simone threw the block heel to the floor and launched herself into Maria’s arms.

Maria kissed her and Simone felt intense relief. Maria tasted so good. Then she broke away and glared at her. “You’re not supposed to be here. Why did you come back?”

“So that we can have a life together.”

Simone looked away. They had become trapped because of Simone’s bloody mindedness. She had thought she was protecting Maria by not returning to France; that Maria was safe at the farmhouse when Vitale had known Maria was there all along. Maybe it had only been a matter of time before they had both been taken out. But what would happen now? Her mind raced with concern and her heart ached with want, and she had the urge to both slap Maria and take her to bed. “What are we going to do?” Maria had an intense look in her eyes, focused and determined, of the kind Simone had seen before when they had stood in a similar spot in this kitchen. It was sexy and wonderful, even though she was angry with Maria, and shaken from being freaked out by her.

“Rafael told me about the accident. I was already on my way here. I must face the problem, Simone. It’s not going away.”

Simone touched Maria’s face as she had done after the ballet, as if testing that she really existed. “They know you’re alive, Maria.”

Maria took Simone’s hand and pressed it to her lips. “I know. I think I was being watched at the farmhouse.”

Simone pulled away. She paced around the room. “You’re not safe here either.”

Maria went to her, cupped her cheeks softly, and waited until Simone looked into her eyes. “I’m safer here. Listen, if Vitale or Stefano wanted me dead, I’d already be gone. I’m not sure what game they’re playing but I intend to stop it once and for all.”

Simone lifted her chin and looked away. “Will this ever go away?”

Maria sighed. “I don’t know, but I have to try.”

“How? How exactly will you do that? Last time it was Alessandro and he nearly killed you. Now it’s Vitale. You can get rid of him and Stefano will still send someone else. It will never end. Patrina is worse than pathetic.” She wrapped her arms around herself to restrain from slapping some sense into Maria.

Maria went to the window and stared out. “I’m going to take out Stefano.”

Simone shook her head. Her heart rose swiftly into her throat. “You’re delusional. How the hell will you get to him behind bars? He’ll have you killed first.”

Maria turned her head and Simone released a soft gasp. Maria was deadly serious.
