Chapter Five

Camilo

I didn’t get a wink of sleep last night, not even a measly hour. But I feel an inexplicable energy as I prepare myself for the day ahead, like a shot of espresso coursing through my veins. And It’s all because of Maria. She’s been on my mind since yesterday. Her image, vivid and alluring, refuses to relinquish its hold on me. And now I’m buzzing with excitement to head to the college and see her again. With a bar of chocolate specially procured for her, I tuck it close to my heart before venturing out the door.

As I step onto the vibrant campus, my senses are heightened, searching for a familiar face among the bustling crowd. Each passing minute feels like an eternity as I scan the sea of students, longing to catch a glimpse of her enchanting presence. The day unfolds, classes blur together, and yet, Maria remains elusive. Time loses its significance, as my thoughts are consumed by her, making it nearly impossible to focus on anything else.

The day draws to a close, and I am about to depart from the campus when my eyes finally lock on her figure. There she stands before me, adorned in the radiant yellow dress that had captured my attention on that fateful first meeting. A foolish grin effortlessly spreads across my face at the sight of her, and my heart performs a joyous dance within my chest. Waving with one hand while grabbing the chocolate bar from my pocket with the other, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of elation. However, my excitement is swiftly subdued as I observe the telltale signs of distress etched on her face. Her eyes, swollen and rimmed with red, betray the traces of tears recently shed. The chocolate bar I had intended to present to her finds its way back into my pocket as I extend my hand to gently grasp her shoulders.

“Where have you been all day long? You haven’t attended any of the day’s lectures.” I inquire about her absence, scanning her face for answers. It is then that she lifts her head, and our eyes lock in a moment of profound connection. In that instant, she extends her hand, revealing a glimmering engagement ring that adorns her finger. The ground beneath me seems to quake, and dizziness envelops me as I struggle to catch my breath.

“What is that ring?” My voice trembles as I muster the courage to ask, my gaze pleading for an explanation. “What… what is happening with you?” I stammer, my throat constricting with each word.

“I had a terrible argument with Sally, and I couldn’t bear it any longer. I left the house,” she reveals, her fingers clutching her head as her tears flow unabated.

“Okay, take a moment to breathe a little,” I offer gently, reaching out to hold her trembling hand, hoping to bring peace to her wounded soul.

Maria nods, her voice choked with emotion. “Sally treated me as if I were a pawn in her game.
