“Lavelle,” said Georgia after dinner and dishes one night as they settled into the living room for conversation, “the younger ones add up all the injustices they believe were dealt them, so they’re going to get their share no matter whom they damage. The older ones actually come to believe they’re performing a service. And in some cases they are, if the woman can afford him. So what if the rich woman never catches on? And even if she does, it’s better than being alone. She’s paying for her pleasures and enjoying herself.”

“In Rollo’s case—”

“Rollo is a different case,” said Georgia. “Deep down, he had never liked being rough cut. He made excuses, made fun of the hoity-toity upper classes while he was jealous of them. He was angry, felt cheated. After he had plenty of money, he thought he could actually become refined by associating with these people. So he attached himself to Estelle. Then, abracadabra, he felt refined.”

“That’s exactly how it was. How did you come to such a conclusion, I mean about his feeling deep down?”

“Hearing the confessions of these men.”

Lavelle raised her head. “Confessions? Well, that’s a new one on me. I’m only privy to lies, one lie after another. The skunks tell me they’re rich, younger than they actually are, healthier, stronger, have their sexual prowess, that they’ll take me away to a coral island or on a trip around the world. They believe they can tell me anything and figure that after we’re married they’ll lie that they ran into bad luck with their investments. Lies for me, and confessions for you! You’ve got the touch, Georgia, my girl.” Lavelle took a drink in hand, raised her legs up on the coffee table, crossed them, and asked, “Have you encountered the midlife crisis bum? He’s the stray who comes in out of the cold, not knowing where the hell he is.”

“He’s a special case, Lavelle. He’s not a fortune hunter in the same sense as the others. He’s a parasite of another kind. He is disappointed in his career, bored with his wife, tied down to his children, and sees only empty years ahead unless he does something quickly to fulfill his dream. He tells himself, ‘I am trying to save myself before time runs out altogether. My hope is to shed my old life, and set out on a new course with a new person. He considers himself one of those people who has a great appetite for life and therefore is entitled to fulfill his appetite. He turns to me and says, ‘You understand me, Georgia. I should have met you at the beginning and married you. Everything would have gone right.’ He gets down on his knees, looks into my eyes, and asks me to save him.”

“Hah!” cackles Lavelle.

“I ask him, ‘How do you expect me to save you?’ He brightens, rushes out and buys an engagement ring. He presents it to me and says he is leaving his wife to marry me.
