Chapter 15

Worried about Elise, Neil had hurried out of the alley to make sure that she was safe and still locked inside his SUV. But before he could get to his vehicle, he had to pass the one he’d been watching when he’d stepped into the alley.

It was still there, and now there was someone behind the wheel, clad in a hoodie pulled tight around his face, just like the intruder had been. Of course, many people owned dark hoodies, so it might not have been the same person. But Neil damn well intended to find out.

The driver must have noticed him approaching, because the lights suddenly flashed on and the engine revved to life. In that flash of light, Neil noticed the woman starting across the street.

Elise.

The headlamps illuminated her face, which was white with fear. She saw the vehicle headed toward her. Neil started running, but he doubted he would reach her in time. The vehicle was too close.

And Elise, who hated to run, did not. As the vehicle bore down on her, she dove back toward the sidewalk she’d stepped off and onto the hood of one of the vehicles parked against the curb.

The brakes on the SUV squealed as the driver swerved back to the right and into the side of the vehicle whose hood Elise was sprawled on. Her body limp as a ragdoll, she tumbled off the hood and onto the sidewalk, and the SUV sped away.

Despite the horror gripping him, Neil moved. Running to where she lay on the sidewalk, he dropped to his knees next to her. Her long hair was tangled across her face, so he couldn’t see it—couldn’t see if her eyes were open—if she was unconscious or...

He couldn’t even consider that—that she might be gone. Not Elise.

She had to be all right. He reached out, his hand shaking, to brush the tendrils of gold hair off her face.

A strong hand gripped his shoulder as Ty leaned down. “Is she all right? Elise?”

Her eyes opened then, and she stared up at them both. But her expression was blank, as if she was just too stunned—or too injured—to speak.

“Call 911!” Neil shouted at his brother, surprised that he could speak for the fear clogging his throat.

“Are you hurt?” Ty asked her again.

“Call!” Neil shouted. “And then go after that damn vehicle! Catch him!”

“You don’t think it was an accident?” Ty asked. But at least he had his cell out.

“That was the vehicle that followed us, that was the intruder from her condo earlier this evening.” He was sure of it now, after the man had tried to kill her.

Had he been successful?

Her eyes were open, but she still hadn’t spoken. And her stare was so vacant.

“Elise?” he called to her, his voice cracking with the emotion overwhelming him. He wasn’t used to her not speaking to him. As angry as they’d gotten at each other during their marriage and partnership, they had never given each other the silent treatment.

Maybe they should have.
