The Chalet School and Barbara

This book was first published in 1954 in a hardback volume and then in 1967 in paperback.

Barbara Chester was not able to go to school previously because she was too frail but with her older sister Beth working for the Maynards as a governess she will be going to the school in the day and staying at the Maynards home.

The new school is ready in Switzerland just a few miles from the Sanatorium and Joey is living near by. However, when Barbara and Beth arrive three of the Maynard children have German Measles and so Barbara is forced to board at the school while they are in quarantine. He cousin Vi Lucy looks after her and she soon settles in with her group of friends, although jealousy leads another girl to try to get her in to trouble with her cousin but is ends quickly when her cousin does not believe that she could be unkind to her.

There is a new maths mistress in old girl Nancy Wilmot who gets a shock when she sees how grown up Peggy Bettany has become.

The girls and mistresses have fun exploring the new building and area and they have trips, including one where they are caught in a blizzard resulting in Barbara and Verity-Anne Carey having to be carried back to school and then they learn to ski. Madge writes a Christmas play which is performed at the end of the term. Hillary Graves (nee Burn) has a baby daughter Marjorie Edith.

The back cover reads : In this story 14-year-old Barbara Chester arrives at the Chalet School for the first time. The school gives the shy and cossetted child everything she has missed, including friends, new strength and confidence, as well as drama and danger.
