I jolted awake at four A.M., that terrible hour when it’s too early to get up. Childhood monsters in the dark were docile compared to the gremlins roistering in my sleeplessness. I rolled out of bed and stuck my arm under the mattress where I’d hidden the coyote fur patch. Like the story of the princess and the pea, I knew I couldn’t sleep until it was gone. My desk lamp lit the unimpressive palm-sized animal skin scrap. It had held such meaning; Nate had given it to me for good luck and protection, and I’d kept it, a memento of our love, if that’s what you would call what had grown between us. I’d returned it to him in the same spirit, to end once he’d carried it through the mountain snow to Canada, a juvenile keepsake like a four-leaf clover, remembered fondly, or forgotten. The patch disturbed me because of the anxiety I poured into it, not any inherent power of its own.

In my hand now it had sinister new implications. How had it come back via Ruby? She hadn’t met Nate, only seen his photo, hadn’t known his real name, and I’d told Nate nothing about her when I gave him his new ID. Everything had changed. It always does. Wasn’t that what my Aussie detective ally had warned me less than a year ago, in a different lifetime—nothing ever ends. If someone was watching Nate and me, if someone suspected our link, the best way I could prove them wrong was to show the fur patch meant nothing. I unlatched the window, chucked the patch out, and went back to bed.
