The first thing everyone does when they get home is take turns in the shower. Dante takes Wayne’s parents next door while Dante’s mother uses our bathroom.

When everyone is clean and back at our house, we head out to the patio and have drinks and chips and salsa.

“This is beautiful,” Mrs. Clark says. “It’s like a little oasis. A little haven.”

“Totally,” I say. “I spend as much time as I can here.”

Rosalie sits on Mrs. Marino’s lap. She’s the closest thing that girl has to a grandmother. Mrs. Marino is brushing her hair, getting it ready for braiding.

“Thank you for taking us in like this, making us part of your family,” Mrs. Clark says.

I smile and look toward the house where Dante is helping Nico make dinner. “I have a feeling that we probably all are going to be family.”

She smiles and then swallows and looks away.

We are all thinking the same thing—if Wayne makes it through this.

“Any change today?” I ask.

“Nothing,” Mr. Clark says.

I immediately want to change the subject.

“Tell us about Wayne’s nine lives,” I say. It was all I needed to say. They both launch into funny stories about how Wayne survived crazy things over his life.

By the time they finish, Nico and Dante have brought dinner out.

After dessert and after-dinner drinks, Mr. and Mrs. Clark plead that they are exhausted and Dante leaves with them. His mother walks them to the door and then also goes to bed.

Rosalie was put to bed a while ago.

Once the front door closes, I turn to Nico.

I’d told him my plans earlier.

“I’m leaving now.”

“Be careful,” he says.

“I will.”
