Despite all Amy’s attempts to persuade Rory otherwise, even breaking out the heavy artillery in the form of her sexiest lingerie, her husband steadfastly refused to budge on the seasonal arrangements. She was dreading the prospect of spending Christmas evening with her in-laws.

Rory claimed it was a fair compromise, since they would be joining her family for lunch. This rationale did not detract from Amy’s resentment-fest. The Flahertys were dull and straight-laced in comparison to her own tribe of dress-over-the-head movers and shakers.

She wanted to devote the entire day to her own set then spend the following day with her husband’s bunch of sad losers. Not that she ever described them in those terms to his face. Rory was devoted to his family, and Amy was smart enough to only bad-mouth them behind his back.

Come early December, she was forced to concede defeat. It looked as if she was well and truly stuck with the Flahertys. They weren’t bad people, that went without saying. It was just they were so dull. Even the obligatory festive games lacked sparkle; not unlike the lacklustre wine they tended to offer. There was no denying they always made an effort whenever she paid them a visited, and always gave the impression they were keen to please their glamorous and successful daughter-in-law.

As Rory aged, it became increasingly apparent he had inherited his dad’s rather staid disposition. He was a plodder. A reliable work-horse with traditional values. Despite his many flaws, Amy loved him dearly. She would not have chosen any other man to be the father of her children. He would undoubtedly make an excellent provider and role model.

Rory Flaherty was not the sort of man to stand idly by and allow his children to backchat their mother or give her the run-around. Amy was confident she had chosen her mate well, and anticipated parenthood with a smile. She planned to broach the subject of breeding over the Christmas break.

As they had been married for seven years, he was bound to be keen. It was likely he would suggest they start trying straightaway. That left a full week to finish her shopping, meet up with friends for festive cheer, and attend the obligatory workplace do. The parties her company regularly threw for their staff had a reputation for being of the wet and wild variety.

Amy chuckled as she locked the front door of the marital five-bedroom detached property, and slid behind the wheel of her Lexus SUV. During the previous decade, she had toiled diligently in pursuit of success, and been rewarded with a place on the senior management team. Even if the party was likely to become a little raucous at times, she had no qualms about attending. It was not as if she ever crossed a line.

Rory knew she was a one-man woman who would never lower herself to fooling around with other staff members. Amy giggled at the notion of being unfaithful to her loving spouse with a random gelled-quiffed idiot from the marketing department.
