After assuring her mother she wasn’t about to do anything stupid, Miriam had set off walking. Since she’d told her mother, she felt terrible. She hadn’t quite expected this reaction. Now she felt like a selfish little girl bringing unnecessary heartache to her family. It had never been her intention to cause hurt, yet her mother’s reaction hadn’t changed her mind. She’d felt a profound sense of relief after telling her, and now she’d made her decision, Miriam felt stronger, convinced she was doing the right thing.

Hans Erdmann was coming for dinner and she hoped that would cheer her mother up somewhat. She knew she couldn’t possibly tell him the truth of what had gone on between them; that would be suicide for all concerned.

Miriam had taken the S-Bahn into the city. She wandered through Alexanderplatz, doing her very best to ignore the plethora of propaganda posters. They proclaimed “Socialism is working”; maybe for some, but not for her. She looked longingly across to the spot in front of the HO store where her and Gerd had last hugged. She couldn’t help wondering when she’d be able to get away from this place.

It hadn’t been a conscious decision, but she found herself ambling to all the spots her and Gerd had spent time together, where they’d talked and laughed together, where they’d shared their hopes and dreams for the future. Now they were just memories, albeit very agreeable ones.

It was a pleasant evening and she was content to lose herself for a time. She didn’t trust herself enough to venture anywhere near the border in case she had a mad rush of blood and decided to scale the wall. She saw the tram appear, slowing to a halt in front of the Rotes Rathaus. On a whim, she ran to catch up with the last passengers getting on. As the tram pulled away, she smiled to herself. She would go to the place where her and Gerd had first kissed. Her stomach flipped at the thought.
