Imagine standing in a crowded New York cafe—loud, right? Well, then add a guy to the mix who doesn’t know how to regulate the volume of his voice. Extra. Fucking. Loud.

I whirl.

Natalia Lin stands a few feet from the counter, gaping at me. I lift my brows in surprise. “Nat! What are you doing here?”

She looks shocked to see me. Like, shocked. I get that randomly seeing me here in the same NYC cafe she’s in is a huge coincidence, but she looks like she’s seen a ghost.

I squeeze between people toward her. “Hey! You here doing some shopping for the store?”

Mouth still open, she gazes up at me and shakes her head. Without a word, she reaches inside the neck of her puffy gray winter coat and draws something out.

I stare at it. It’s a lanyard pass for the video game convention. Each pass lists the username we go by on our respective gaming platforms.

Hers says “FaePrincess28.”

It’s my turn for my mouth to fall open. “You? Y-you?”

“And you?” she replies.

I open my wool coat and show her my pass. She lifts it toward her face. Dweeb6.

We lock eyes. “You,” we say at the same time.

The crowd seems to recede around me as I lose myself in her green-brown eyes. Natalia is Leah. Leah is Natalia. Natal...leah. Natalia. FaePrincess28.

“Mikey?” she says finally.

“Michaelson,” I say, and she closes her eyes with understanding.

“Of course.”

“Are...are you disappointed?” I ask, holding my breath.

She gnaws on her full lower lip, and the action is so distracting I almost miss her reply. “Are you?”

“Hell no,” I breathe. I’m still processing it, but the girl I fell in love with is the same girl I’ve realized I’m seriously attracted to. And it’s the girl I’ve known most of my life.

“I’m…” She swallows, then offers a small smile. “I’m not either.” Nat touches her forehead, shaking her head slightly and laughing. “I...I can’t quite process this.”

God, I want to kiss her. Then it hits me. I had phone sex with Natalia Lin. I had phone sex with this gorgeous, stunning woman. Holy shit. Does she hate me? Is that wrong?

“Do you want to go outside?” she asks, fanning herself.

I chuckle. “Yeah. Come on.”

My intention was to meet and chat over a latte, but there are just too many fucking people in here.

We head outside. The frigid air is almost a relief. We walk in silence a little toward the Metropolitan Pavilion.

“So, this is...interesting,” I say.

Natalia chuckles. “I know. I’m sorry. My mind is just kind of blown right now.”

“Mine too.” I reach for her hand. “But in the best possible way.”

She hesitates only a second before slipping her hand into mine, then smiles up at me. “It’s not bad.
