Chapter Eighteen
SIX HOURS LATER JIM stood on the front patio of the Eats & Ale restaurant and watched as the U Haul truck rolled into the parking lot. He crossed his arms over his naked chest and guffawed as the truckâs back wheel slid off the culvert and into the ditch. Mary gunned the engine and plunged the seven-ton carrier forward, leaving a cloud of caliche dust.
âExcellent recovery.â Jim yelled, stepping out in his bare feet and motioning the driver, âBack it up here to the garage.â
âYou better let me back it up.â Levi said, his fingers digging into the upholstery.
âNo, I got us this far, I can back it up.â Mary argued, putting the box truck in reverse.
Jim cackled again when the vehicle lurched backward through the open door, rolling over crates of canned commodities.
âOops.â Mary said dropping from the truck, âIâll clean it up.â
âAnd youâll pay for it too.â Levi added, wading through a sea of green beans and corn.
Mary had just dumped the last dust pan full of ruined vegetables into the compost bin when Cici and Clara arrived.
âWhat the heck happened here?â Clara asked, peeking around the truck into the garage.
âItâs my fault. I should never have let her drive.â Levi sighed, pointing at his wife.
âClara Bell!â Jim gushed, running up behind her and sweeping her into his arms. âMy love... the mother of my children.â Clara let him cradle her for a moment, planting light kisses over her face until she felt Ceciliaâs eyes boring through them.
âPut me down honey and say hello to your niece.â
Jim gently lowered Clara to her feet and turned to take inventory of the clansman he had never met.
âWell youâre just a child â a beautiful little child.â He said as he studied the womanâs girlish features.
âI am the same age as Clara.â Cici retorted. It was not exactly true but very close.
âReally?â Jim glanced at his wife and back to his niece. âIs that true?â
âYes, it seems being married to an old man has caused me to age prematurely.â Clara said in jest.
Her time in the clouds has kept the crowâs-feet at bay. Mary telepathically told with a snicker, itâs a shame I canât hang out up there for a few months. Hey, Cici should start a cloud spa.
Ha-ha. Linda intercepted the thought; Your son wants his mommy. Quit playing around and come on already.
âWell we had better get home.â Mary said turning to Clara, âWould you be kind enough to give us a ride?â
âAbsolutely.â Clara answered, âCici and Jim need a little privacy to get better acquainted anyway.â Clara could sense the idea of being alone together made them both uneasy. âFor heavenâs sake you are family, start acting like it.â
âWe will be fine.â Jim assured her. âIâll show Cici where she will be staying and give her a tour of the café.â
âI am anxious to get started... May we?â
âSure.â He motioned toward the house that was nestled behind the café. âHurry home Clara.â He blew a kiss to his wife and waved at the others, âBy Levi, see you later old man.
