Chapter Fourteen

GRACE SANK INTO THE warm water and closed her eyes. She hadn’t realised just how bone-weary she was until stepping into the bath. The water had cooled enough to be just the right temperature but still hot enough to give her road-weary muscles a much needed respite.

She might have fallen asleep had a knock at the door not been quickly followed by the rush of feet into the room. Grace had only enough time to sit up and cross her arms across her breasts before four strangers surrounded the bath.

The tallest of the women hovered over her, clearly mortified but composed. “I do apologise for this invasion of your privacy. I did tell the others you may not have finished bathing yet.”

Grace wasn’t certain if she felt embarrassed or amused. These had to be Robert’s sisters. She had hoped for a less revealing introduction, but having been an only child, she wasn’t sure if this kind of behaviour was normal practice between sisters.

She reached for the towel hanging on the rack beside the bath and let out a nervous giggle, then another as she fought to find her words, the temptation being to curse in French. She was glad she didn’t, though, for they, like Robert, may very well have spoken the language.

With four pairs of eyes staring down at her, waiting for her to say something, she finally summoned an “Hello” before giggling again and asking, “If you wouldn’t mind turning around, but I’m afraid I’m not used to an audience when bathing.”

The mouth of the one who looked the youngest popped open, clearly not understanding what all the fuss was about, but she turned around when the others did.

Grace rose from the water and wrapped the towel around herself.

Now feeling a little more sociable, she said, “You must be Robert’s sisters. It’s nice to meet you.”

The tallest turned and gave Grace an embarrassed grin. “I’m Margaret, and I do apologise for our intrusion. You must think us raised by fishwives. Mother will simply be beyond herself when she hears.”

Grace lifted a white cotton shift from the clothes rack and slipped it over her head, letting the towel drop to the floor. “I see no reason why it should come up in conversation. Do you?”

The remaining sisters turned around to face her, and Margaret placed a hand on the short blond-haired girl’s shoulder. “Aimee is the baby of the family.”

A pout replaced Aimee’s smile. “I wish everyone would stop referring to me as the baby. I’m only two months short of turning fifteen.”

Grace almost laughed aloud at the girl’s thunderous expression, but thought better of it.

Margaret ignored Aimee’s protestations and pointed to the next sister. “That’s Elizabeth. She has just survived her first season.”

It was hard not to be jealous of Elizabeth’s perfect beauty, especially when her smile appeared so genuine and friendly. Even though they were all beautiful, Elizabeth stood out with her milky-white complexion, her high cheekbones, dark brown eyes and raven black hair. There was something otherworldly about her.
