Chapter 4

“Here we are.” He said as the driver came to open the door.

We walked the circular driveway, and I could hear the ocean in the background.

“Do you want to eat outside on the terrace?”

“It's too too cold to eat outside.”

He unlocked the door, and my nose was enamored with the scent of baked chicken, rice and vegetables.

“There's a fireplace on the terrace.”

“Yeah that sounds good then.”

I followed him into the kitchen and watched him make our plates in awe. The kitchen island was lined with covered platters of food.My stomach growled, and I was embarrassed when he looked up at me. He poked a fork into a piece of chicken and came to where I was standing.

“Open.”

“I can wait a few minutes.”

“You're starving. I can hear your stomach growling.”

“Chase.”

When I opened my mouth, he pushed the fork in and waited for me to chew. I closed my mouth and gave in to his demands.

“This is delicious.”

“Thank you.” He said going back to the other side of the island.

I could hear someone walking in the hallway, and I curiously turned around to see who else was joining us for dinner. This was supposed to be a date. Why would he invite someone else to dinner?”

“That's just some of my staff.”

I raised an eyebrow and kept looking in the direction of the heels. He said they wouldn't be back until Monday.

“This kitchen was a mess after making such a huge meal, and I couldn't have you eating dinner in a messy kitchen, so I asked a few of my cleaning ladies to come clean. I was hoping they would be finished before you arrived, but it looks like they found some work to do in the other rooms.”

I was sure he could see the skepticism on my face. I didn't believe those heels belonged to the cleaning staff. It was probably his wife...or whatever she was to him.

A few minutes later, two ladies dressed in French maid uniforms stepped in the kitchen. They were obviously surprised to see me.

“Excuse me.” They both said in unison.

“We weren't aware your company had arrived Mr. Wright.”

“It's fine Hilda. You and Sophia can get going.”

“Ummm do you want us to come in at our regular time tomorrow?” The heavier woman asked.

Her cheeks were almost the same color as her ginger hair. She wasn't good at hiding her embarrassment, and both ladies spoke with a thick European accent.

“I'll call you and let you know what time to come in tomorrow.”

“Thank you sir.”

We both watched them walk out the kitchen, and when they stepped in the hall, they switched to their native language. Which sounded like it could be German. I'd ran across a few Germans in Europe who spoke with the same accent.

“Are all your staff as bubbly as them?”

“What do you mean?” He asked confused.

“They were blushing at the sight of us.”

“It's been so long since I've had any guests at the mansion. They're just surprised to see me with such a beautiful lady.”
