Chapter 21
Lark thinks that I donât know anything about her, but sheâs dead wrong. I could write a book about that woman. I know she left home to pursue her dreams of singing when she was only eighteen years old. I know she has a family, but sheâs not super close with them. She does talk to them on occasion, but mostly on holidays and birthdays. She loves old music, and I donât mean classic rock. She loves jazz from the forties and earlier. But there is still so much I donât know and that is going to change.
The next day as we travel to our last solo act on the road, I talk Gwen into letting us take a bus instead of a plane. My whole âweâll save moneyâ argument apparently worked.
And so, I have Lark, stuck at a table playing cards. Kade and Savannah are playing guitars and singing awful songs from the eighties. Amelia was able to join us. I admit, when the six of us are together, it just feels likeâ¦home. Harry and Amelia are playing cards with us.
âI need to go study,â Amelia finally says.
âI can quiz you,â Harry says, squeezing her leg. She gives him a pointed look.
âHarry, I actually need to study.â
âYeah, and I can help,â he says again. She laughs and playfully swats him on the chest as she gets up.
Harry follows her to the bedroom in the back of the bus. I look across the table at Lark. She grins at me and winks, and I laugh.
âLetâs play a new game,â I say to her.
âLike what?â
âLetâs play twenty questions,â I suggest innocently.
âTwenty questions?â she repeats.
âYeah, you know, itâs whenââ
âI know what it is, but why would you want to play it? I mean really, itâs not even a game,â she points out.
I shrug. âItâll pass the time.â
She leans back against the cushion of the seat. âFine.â
âOK, Iâll go first. Whatâs your favorite color?â I ask her.
âGuess,â she responds.
âThatâs not how you play this game.â
She groans. âViolet. And yours is blue,â she states.
âHowâd you know that?â
âRemember that time you couldnât do that interview forâ¦I canât even remember what magazine. Anyhow, it was like kid reporters or something. I had to get all the answers to their questions,â she says.
âOh,â I reply. âOK, your turn.â
âUhâ¦â She puts a finger to her chin as she contemplates questions.
âCome on, it canât be that hard to think of a question,â I urge.
âItâs justâ¦well, I feel like I know almost everything about you.â
âReally?â I ask with a pointed look.
âWellâ¦I mean, other than some stuff about your sister, and some details on your love life that Iâd rather not know, yeah. I know lots about you, Lincoln.â Her comment about Carrie catches me by surprise. Sheâs not wrong. I donât talk much about my sister. Itâs not that I donât think about her. Itâs just too fucking hard to talk about her.
âOK, whatâs my favorite movie?â I ask her.
âSuperman, the one with Christopher Reeves.â
âWhatâs my favorite sport?â
She rolls her eyes.
