When she stepped out of the car to pick me up on the night of the dance, Corrin looked like the results of a Pinterest search for âaesthetic dream.â
She had her hair in space buns that had tiny diamond pins in them and wore a dress with a sequin top that changed from silver to a black as she moved and a tulle skirt that was black and speckled with tiny silver beads that looked like stars twinkling in the night sky. Her dark brown skin glowed against the colors of the dress as she twirled around to show it off.
Corrin looked so soft and warm. It was like my body had a mind of its own, and I moved toward her and barely caught myself with my cane as I tripped over my feet because I was definitely not looking where I was going.
Her shoes were spiky heels that Bailey had painted to look like galaxies. I had a matching paint job on my Converse, but it looked much better on Corrin.
I was not cool. But I felt like if I was close enough to Corrin, her coolness might radiate onto me. She was picking me up for a dance, and all I could think was we were going to maybe dance together which meant Iâd get to touch her. Shoulders? Hands?
I was losing it. Was I drooling?
âYou look stunning, Corrin,â my parent said and took a picture of her as she struck a pose.
âGet in there, Chuck,â they said, and the two of us stood side by side.
Corrin grabbed me by the waist, laughing, and planted a kiss on my cheek as my parent snapped a thousand pictures. My mom was simultaneously giving instructions on turning it to portrait mode and trying to get us to keep still so they could figure it out.
âYouâre loving this, arenât you?â I said, my cheeks literally on fire.
âYou have no idea,â Corrin said, laughing, and she turned to straighten my tie. I went with a long, skinny, black, vintage one that belonged to one of my great grandpas. I always had good luck when I wore it.
âOkay, we have to go,â I said, giggling at my parents.
âCan you please send me all those pictures?â Corrin asked as she dragged me away to her Honda. âChuck will forget if I ask her to do it.â
âOf course, dear, you both be safe,â my mom said as we got in the car.
âBye, girls, have fun!â my parent said as we buckled up and drove away.
Corrin turned on the stereo and cranked up The Smiths, so we both sang along as we headed to the dance.
âArenât we picking up Bailey?â I asked as we turned left instead of right on his street.
âNope, our sweet angel child Bailey got himself a date.â Corrin beamed. âI helped him get ready and everything. Heâs wearing a tuxedo, Chuck! Bailey is in an honest-to-goodness tux.â
âReally? How did I not know that?â I asked excitedly, âWho is it?â
âIâll tell you, but donât freak out.
