Gallius stood at the rim of the gorge cleaning his whip and looking at the retreating tainted. Even with their numbers, they were no match for the emperor’s chosen. He cursed under his breath when a movement caused a sharp pain in his left elbow. A black wooden spike was embedded above the bone. He pulled it out with a grunt and tossed it aside. It barely bled.

Down in the gorge, the legionnaires were getting to their feet, steadying themselves, looking around for their comrades. Two of them were pulling their sergeant from under a heap of bodies.

“Pointless!” Gallius shouted at them. “Even if he is alive, the taint must have seeped into him by now. Just toss him with the rest.”

One of the two legionnaires stood up and removed his helmet. Then he looked straight at Gallius and, with slow, precise movements, peeled the rags from around his head.

“You fucking cunt!” he said. “First you drag us into this hell, then you abandon us to fight the broken who were falling from the sky. Now you lecture us on how to treat our sergeant? Stop trying to pretend you care about us. You may hide behind all your pious talk, but we all know you’re a bastard.”

Gallius grinned, but his eyes remained cold. He dropped his whip and primed his hand crossbow. This time he reached in a different satchel and produced a steel bolt.

“Maybe you’re right, soldier. I feel nothing for you.” He aimed and pulled the trigger. The bolt vanished into the soldier’s head, leaving only a red dot on his forehead.

“Anyone el…”, he drifted off as he felt a tremor around him. Not in the air or the earth, just assaulting waves of foul energy pulsating from the gorge.
