Chapter Fourteen

If anyone wants to get me a Christmas present, I’m a size window seat and tropical island.

The ringing persisted and Brady started to reach out to the table for his cell. But the lump on his back was proof the puppy had finally worn herself out and fallen asleep.

Brady decided to remain still. No way in hell did he want to rouse the beast. Who knew such a little thing could have so much energy?

The cell finally stopped ringing and the alert for a voicemail took its place. He’d check it later. He honestly had no clue what time he finally fell asleep on the couch, but he was just thankful that Violet had brought back supplies. The dog had loved the chew toy to death...literally. There were threads and stuffing everywhere from what used to be a stuffed monkey.

Maybe Violet had heard something from the rightful owner. Someone knew where this puppy came from, now if they would just come forward. Unless they didn’t want the dog, in which case that would be an entirely different scenario...and that would make someone an absolute jerk to treat an animal this way.

His doorbell rang and Brady jerked, blinking against the bright living room. Had he fallen asleep again?

The dog popped up and barked, then fell off Brady’s back and onto the floor. Just as he started to see if she was okay, the pup scrambled toward the entryway and was barking her fool head off.

Brady came to his feet and rubbed a hand through his hair. His stiff back and sore neck were not happy about sleeping on the sofa. He hadn’t meant to. He’d lain down for a minute with the dog until he’d ultimately passed out.

The doorbell rang once more, sending the dog into an even louder, higher pitched barking fit.

Brady reached down to lift the dog so she didn’t run out the door before he flicked the lock. The second the door swung open, Violet stood there with a wide smile.

“Oh, did I wake you?” she asked, raking her eyes over him. “It’s almost noon.”

“Noon? Seriously?”

Violet let herself in and laughed. “Rough night with your new girlfriend?”

He closed the door and set the dog down. She immediately went and started jumping up at Violet’s legs...which he noticed were nice and bare.

“Luna, get down.”

Violet quirked her brow. “Luna. That’s cute. I didn’t think you were naming her.”

Brady twisted his neck from side to side to get the kink out. “I can’t keep calling her dog or pup. I had to do something.”

“That’s adorable.”

He didn’t want to be adorable. He wanted to sleep in his bed without a furball on his back.

“Why are you so dressed up?” he asked, snapping his fingers to get Luna’s attention.

“I had the photo shoot, remember? Robin, Simone, and I were at the gazebo in the park and we ended up going to each of our buildings and getting a few shots, too.”

Her simple red dress with short sleeves and her little gold sandals were adorable.
