Chapter 15
Gabe poured another cup of coffee for her. She stared into the dark liquid and took a deep breath. Just what she needed. There wouldnât be a wink of sleep tonight, with all that had happened. Even without the coffee, her mind was buzzing on its own.
âRoryâs in the kitchen making sandwiches,â Gabe told her as he passed the creamer to her.
She made a face. Food did not sound good to her stomach, busy pitching and rolling without any added sustenance. âNo thanks.â
Gabe laughed. âA boy his age can eat unlimited amounts of food at anytime.â
Ellie nodded and took a sip of her coffee. âYouâre telling me. Iâm the one that pays for his lunches every day,â she grinned. âI can stock the refrigerator on Monday and it needs re-stocking by Wednesday,â she laughed. âBut I donât mind. Iâm just glad he wants to work for me.â
âSo, what do you think of his theory?â Gabe asked, reaching for his cup.
âThe Sinclair Conspiracy, as he calls it?â she almost laughed. âWell, I think it does have some merit. It was right after Bart Sinclair was declared the heir that all of this craziness started in town.â
âOr, it could be coincidence,â Gabe suggested. âStill. . .â
Ellie shrugged. âSomebody is looking for something. Itâs not just some common thief. They arenât even stealing anything. I canât think of another explanation.â
âWell, itâs a wildfire of gossip over at the diner,â Gabe said. âI had lunch there a couple of days ago and it was all talk about the Sinclair family. Do you think thereâs any truth to the rumor that Charles Sinclair made a will and hid it from the relatives?â
âMadge says that was his threat to the people at the house the day they all got into a big argument over who was inheriting what from the estate.â
âOf which she is one,â he reminded her.
Ellie chewed her lip for a moment. âIâm not sure she was in on that argument. But, I donât understand why she didnât mention that when she was telling me about working up at the house.â
A knock sounded at the front door of the store. Ellie glanced at the grandfather clock in the corner. Three hours and forty minutes after midnight. A perfect time for company.
âWonder who that is?â Gabe said as he scooted away from the table and headed to the door.
Ellie smoothed back her hair. She had gone upstairs and changed into jeans and a shirt, but she had neglected to comb her hair or brush her teeth. She must look like sheâd just rolled out of bed. Which she literally had, when Officer Brown showed up a few hours ago.
She didnât have to wait long. It was only a moment until she recognized Betty Joâs voice. As owner of the newspaper, she and her husband photographer seemed to have their noses in everyoneâs business. And the whole Sinclair saga was driving them even harder than usual.
âEllie, there you are!â Betty Jo exclaimed as she came around the rack of calendars.
