Seeing Lucy’s face when Giselle appeared and made her declaration as his wife was something Daniel wished he could put out of his head, and if she hadn’t run off so quickly he could’ve explained it all. But he couldn’t do anything now other than plough on at the shack for another half an hour before closing. When you ran your own business the responsibility sat squarely on your shoulders, especially on opening night, and your personal life had to take a back seat.

Giselle had at least quickly cleared things up with the police officer, Daniel had backed her up as a character witness, he supposed, and, better than that, the police officer’s colleague had nabbed the pickpockets who’d come to the village with the specific goal of targeting unsuspecting waffle fans. They’d made three arrests and it seemed that was enough to get them off Giselle’s back.

When they were at last done for the night, Daniel thanked Brianna and Troy for their hard work and let them out of the shack. They both looked so shattered he bet they hadn’t expected to be this exhausted working at an unassuming log cabin when they’d applied for the jobs, but he hoped they’d be back because they’d played a part in making tonight a roaring success. They’d served customers with a smile, neither of them had been flustered at facing a queue – it helped they’d both worked in fast-food joints before – and the feedback from every person who came in had been outright positive.

‘Safe to come in this time?’ Giselle walked back over to the shack as Daniel swept the veranda.

‘I don’t know, are you bringing the police this time?’ He smiled. It was great to see her. ‘Come on in out of the cold. I’m sorry I couldn’t talk earlier, it’s been crazy.’ And all he wanted now was to go and see Lucy and clear things up, properly. To her he must seem like a total liar. It would be hard to persuade her to give him the time to set the record straight, but he had to at least try.

Giselle smiled, taking off her coat and, as he thought he’d noticed earlier, she was pregnant. He nodded to the bump before giving her a huge hug. ‘Congratulations, you.’ This woman was special to him, always would be. ‘When are you due?’

‘January twenty-ninth and it can’t come soon enough – I feel like a beached whale. Should’ve seen me trying to get out of the bath this morning… Stu had to haul me out.’

As much as he needed to scarper, he couldn’t do it when she’d come here especially. ‘I’m pleased for you… not about the bath problems, but a brother or sister for Peter, that’s great.’

When he looked at the time yet again she asked, ‘Am I keeping you?’

‘You are, but it doesn’t matter.’ She wasn’t convinced. ‘I can talk for a bit, but I really need to go somewhere so I don’t have long.’

‘Listen to you… anyone else would want to put their feet up after such a busy time.
