Chapter 17: Finding Resonance

(Jenny wiped her eyes on her sleeve, glad there was no one in the sunny living room with her. She had known Lizzie had never married and had often wondered if Lizzie was just one of those people who didn’t make those kinds of connections.

Before getting to this point in the journals, she had been convinced she had been right about that. Somehow, she kept forgetting that during this stage of Lizzie’s life, she was about the same age as herself, perhaps a bit younger. And hadn’t it taken her what felt like forever to find Burt?

The revelation that Reloi could do a version of what she did herself was a bit startling as well. Of course, he hadn’t had the same need for it as she had, but it was incredibly romantic to her to note that he had chosen to use his talent for communication across dimensions distinctly for the purpose of connecting with Lizzie.

Remembering her own dalliances with Burt by the little pool on the Merced River and where it had led them as a couple, she smiled through her tender tears. It wasn’t like there was nothing to do. She did her usual mental and physical workouts with Amenia and Tarafau, played with the linklings, and attended various Daringi events. She had gotten to participate in the family baby-welcoming event with Tarafau and Amenia’s boys and their families. Tarafau had confided to her at one point that they also had an older daughter who was currently away on a mission of sorts, but was out of reach of any communication, so they were glad to have Lizzie there, symbolic of the daughter who was absent.

What had sounded like a reasonable break when Lizzie had first agreed to it, now became a bit of a burden. At this time, she could think of little else than returning to Grild to continue her internship. Not only had she become very engaged with the people in Reloi’s planet, but she now yearned to return to be with Reloi, face to face.

Although she enjoyed their time together on the mental plane, it could not replace the need she felt to be with him in the real world. At first, he had only appeared to her in his imaginary state of
