SADE

Morning sunlight comes through the blinds, waking me gradually from a pleasant but unmemorable dream. Nick is next to me, still sleeping. I watch his chest rise and fall. He looks younger when he’s asleep, more peaceful. My half-awake brain is suddenly hit with an overwhelming pang of wistfulness.

He’s leaving today. It’s been a week and we’ve spent it together. I’ve slept in this hotel room every night. He’s been meeting me after work, always with some little gift: a book, a box of elegant Japanese candies.

On Monday, we had dinner together at an upscale sushi restaurant before going back to the Forest Loft and spending hours in bed together before finally falling asleep. On Tuesday, we grabbed burgers at a fun divey place in town before heading back. On Wednesday, we went back to Forest Loft immediately and spent the rest of the evening naked, pausing only to cobble together a quick dinner from the groceries Nick had finally gotten. The rest of the week had been a blissful blur.

Now, Saturday morning, I’m sore but I don’t want it to end. It’s been so intense. Neither of us has mentioned the future. I know I’m intentionally avoiding the topic. With him? I don’t know if he is deliberately not talking about it or if he just doesn’t care. It feels like he cares.

It hasn’t just been fucking, although granted, there’s been a lot of fucking, but there’s also been a lot of talking. We’ve talked about architecture and design, about his world travels, about my brother’s comedy career. We’ve talked about spirituality, nature, politics and where technology is headed. It’s been some of the best conversation I’ve had in years. I feel like I have a new best friend… but he’s going back to L.A. today.

We’re grownups and it’s the twenty-first century. I’m not broke. It’s not like we’re two kids at summer camp who are never going to see each other again. It’s just… I don’t want to get hurt again. Not after what happened with my ex.

Nick blinks awake and looks at me. Instead of a big smile like he’s given me every morning all week, he just looks sad and serious. I brace myself, waiting for a “Well, that was fun,” dismissal. Instead, he just says, “I’m going to take a shower.”

“I guess I should get going,” I say, feeling suddenly numb. I just have to get through the next few minutes without embarrassing myself.

Nick looks startled. “Could you stay?” he says. “It’ll just be a few minutes.”

The numbness starts to melt away a little, making way for a faint glow of hope. While Nick disappears into the bathroom and I listen to the shower running, I try to distract myself. My heart is beating faster and faster. I go open the TV cabinet and turn the TV on. It’s the middle of The Big Lebowski. I stare at the surreal, breast-filled scene until Nick comes out of the bathroom and turns the TV off.

He kneels in front of me, studying my face.
