Gorgonzola and Cheddar Cheese: Strong Flavor, Big Benefits
In small amounts, cheese can be a diet good guy.
A 1½-ounce serving of Cheddar offers about 300 milligrams of calcium, as much as a glass of milk. Cheese also contains a type of fat called conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, which scientists are investigating as a new weapon against breast cancer. Additionally, eating cheese at the end of meals can protect your teeth against decay.
Still, all this good news comes with a gentle reminder that cheese has a lot of saturated fat. That 1½-ounce serving packs 9 grams of it, and that’s not great for your heart. So, while we’re not telling you to cut cheese out of your heart-healthy diet altogether, it’s best to consume it in small portions. Experts suggest choosing extra-sharp Cheddar or Gorgonzola because their strong flavors will satisfy your taste buds in smaller amounts.
Here are some other tips for indulging in real cheese.
Know your Gorgonzola. Be on the lookout for it at the next party you attend, or serve it at your own bash. Gorgonzola has a light ivory surface, and its interior is marbled with blue-green veins. The American Dairy Association says that it tastes great with sweet crackers and walnuts (which are well-known for their cholesterol-cutting power).
Avoid temptation. At home, help yourself to one serving of cheese, then wrap the rest and store it right away.
