It didn’t take Monaco long to get what she needed. Within minutes she had picked a pocket and come up with a sheaf of yuan and a credit card. Minutes later, a cell phone—harder to get then the money—then more cash and another cell phone.

Now it was time to get out of here. Returning to the Buick, she froze.

Where the hell was Richter?

Monaco didn’t panic. Instead, she melted back into the crowd, working her way into a doorway where she could hide and keep an eye on the Buick.

Hsing had approached the car at an angle so the American could not see him in the rearview mirrors. Then he had drifted around the sedan and pulled his gun. “Hello, Dr. Richter. Get out of the car.”

Richter had given him a look that shocked Hsing. This was not the college professor he had so briefly met. Hsing’s gaze took in the bruises and the bandaged hand and he understood that something terrible had happened to the professor in a very short period of time. But what caught him even more was the look in Richter’s eyes and the set of his jaw.

Richter’s hand drifted toward the ignition switch.

Hsing shook his head. “Do not try to start the car. Get—”

Richter slammed the door open. Dancing backward, Hsing dodged the door. Richter lunged out after it, shoulder down.

It might have worked.

But Hsing brought the grip of his gun down on the back of Richter’s head just in time. The American professor dropped with a groan before struggling to his feet.

Hsing, staying a cautious distance away, said, “I do not wish to harm you.”

“Like I believe you.” Richter swayed on his feet.

Hsing directed Richter to climb back in the Buick. “Hands where I can see them.”

He got Richter into the van and used plasti-cuffs to tie him to the door handle. “I will be back shortly with your partner. Do not start screaming or I will have to gag you and hide you in the back.”
