Arabella stood on the bridge of the Savari vessel and wrung her hands. She knew her other mate was aboard the neighboring ship. She’d just walked through the bridge-wing door when he’d told them he wasn’t armed. The sound of his voice made her skin prickle with awareness. The hair on the back of her neck stood on end and she fought the urge to shiver.

Merrick wrapped his arm around her and kissed her temple. “It will be fine,” he whispered in her ear. “If you want me with you when you meet him, I will be right beside you.”

She did want him there. It wasn’t until they had come upon the smaller ship drifting lifeless in space that she realized her other mate was a Hienial-Halfling. She knew and loved Ryo, but what if her other mate was as cruel and horrible as she’d heard the Hienials could be? She definitely wanted Merrick with her. At least until she knew she could trust herself with the other man.

Trusting her new mate wasn’t the problem. The problem was in trusting herself not to draw his attention. If he was cruel, he need never know she was his mate. As long as she kept her distance, he would never know. Still, the dreams she’d had of him were wonderful. He was kind and loving, even if he was a bit dominant. She liked dominance to an extent. Merrick was a prince, it was in his blood to act the alpha and she loved it. She would love it in this mate, too, so long as he wasn’t cruel.

They watched the ship draw closer on the view screen as they dragged it closer using the long cable. She knew why they didn’t use the tractor-beam. The deployment of the grappling hook gave them longer to prepare a security contingent. Who knew what awaited them aboard the other vessel?

Crossing her arms over her breasts, she brought her hand to her mouth and bit her thumbnail. The wait was interminable. She wanted nothing more than to get the introductions over with. To see for herself that he was the man in her prophetic dreams, not the animal she feared him to be.

It seemed like hours when in reality, it had only been minutes since they’d made contact. The security contingent stood just outside the shuttle bay and waited for the compartment to pressurize. Each one held their weapon up and ready, prepared for any eventuality. The scans only showed one life sign aboard the vessel, but the Hienials were widely known for their deceptive abilities.

She stood trembling within Merrick’s warm and protective embrace as the doors slid open. The guards entered the shuttle bay, their weapons held out in front of them.

The smaller ship’s door slid open and a stocky blond man walked out, his empty hands held out from his sides. The guards kept their weapons trained on him and he stared them down. The man moved forward and a guard nervously shot the side of the ship next to the man.
