CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

ENRIQUE LAY ON THE couch staring at the living room ceiling. It wasn’t the memory of Skylar’s sobs that kept him awake so much as the anguish in her voice when they’d spoken afterward. Even when she’d told him about finding Mia, there had been a measure of indignation in her tone. She’d been torn up, but there was a steel framework holding her together. This was different. As though her very soul had been stolen. It ate at him like battery acid. After a few hours of fitful sleep, he awoke and called Andy.

“How’s Sky doing?” Andy asked.

“I’m not sure. She’s really shaken up about what happened to Mia.”

“The little girl?”

“Yeah.” Enrique rested his hand on the linens he’d folded and placed on the couch. “And you’re right about there being something else, but she’s not ready to talk about it.”

“It’s a guy.”

“She told you?” Enrique straightened.

Andy cleared his throat. “No. But only a man could do that to a woman.”

Sometimes Andy surprised him. “You’re probably right.”

“Anyway, Jasmine and Manny are coming in today. We’ve got everything under control, so no worries.”

“Thanks.”

“Is Sky gonna go back to work?”

“I don’t think so.” He told Andy what Skylar had said about the guy who’d harassed her.

“I’d give him a proper beat-down if I knew who it was.” Andy released a frustrated sigh. “Let me know if there’s anything else I can do to help.” They clicked off.

Since no sounds came from Skylar’s room, Enrique took a shower, elated to use a spotless bathroom he didn’t have to share with a bunch of other guys. Despite all she’d been through, she’d left him a clean, good-smelling over-sized bath towel, even doubling it over the towel bar the way they did at hotels. On the counter next to the sink was a basket filled with a variety of unopened shampoos, soaps and lotions that hadn’t been there the night before. The special touches made him feel like an honored guest.

Accustomed to rising early and pushing hard all day—often late into the night—Enrique felt antsy. He stood and went to one of the bookshelves. Skylar owned all manner of books; one section contained college textbooks. There was also a wide range of fiction, from children’s books to New York Times bestsellers in hardcover. He came to one shelf filled entirely with books about baseball. The rules of the game, the history, individual franchise histories, biographies and autobiographies of famous players. He slid out one about Jackie Robinson. The author had signed it: For Joe. Best wishes for a great season and storied career.

He replaced it and picked up a signed baseball, turning it over in his hands. The scrawl wasn’t legible. He heard Skylar’s door open and placed the ball back on the shelf. When she went into the bathroom, he started some coffee, wondering what she usually ate for breakfast.

A few minutes later, she came down the hall. Her hair was pulled back in a knot and she wore blue shorts and an over-sized Cal-Poly sweat shirt.
