I let Cat position me on the couch and then return to her chores. She reappeared twenty minutes later, Creeper draped over one shoulder like a stole and Zombie at her heels.

“Dessert,” she announced, setting a tray of cookies and a tub of whipped topping down on the coffee table. “Two-legged dessert,” she clarified for Zombie’s benefit, curling her upper lip when he edged closer.

Wisely, the husky dog slunk his way up alongside the couch and flopped down.

“How’d this get in here?” I pointed to a book of Icelandic fairy tales sitting on the coffee table.

“I was reading it while you were in the hospital. I love ‘The Horse Gullfaxi and the Sword Gunnfoder,’” Cat said. “Icelandic tales are my favorites. Where else can you have giants and heroes, horses with golden manes, tiny sticks that grow forests if you throw them, and swords that can kill nine people at once?”

“Well? Start reading! That one’s long, if I remember correctly. I wouldn’t mind hearing it.” I poked her with my toe through the blankets once she sat down on the end of the couch.

Cat shot me the most lovely withering look.

“Ahem.” She pointedly cleared her throat, pulling the book onto her lap.

I grinned like an idiot even though it made my nose hurt. Hearing the graceful undulations of her speech was so wonderful in comparison to the painfully long silences and animalistic mutters of her first few days with us. When Cat finished it was my turn. She passed the book to me and wallowed down into a comfortable position as I started reading aloud.

Sheva came in as I reached the ending of my chosen story. She looked exhausted and it was too early for school to be over. I hesitated in my reading and raised an eyebrow.

“Had a colicky pony. They came and fetched me to help. It’s one of our best mares. Think she’s going to make it but I’m beat.” She swiped at her silky cornrows which, contrary to what she might think, were still in perfect order. “I came over here to try and relax.” She motioned to Cat’s end of the couch. “I hope she stays here forever.”

I looked and found Cat slumbering. She was draped on her back, her legs over mine, one arm up beside her head. Her hair spilled in a frothing rusty wave over the far arm of the couch.

Sheva snorted. “And I wasn’t even looking for a best friend.”

Major announcement there. Besides Ethan, Sheva didn’t have many friends. She didn’t want many friends.

“Don’t look so flabbergasted,” Sheva admonished me. “It’s not like you don’t totally love her too.”

She had me there.

“She is sort of perfect, isn’t she?”

“As only Catskin can be.” Sheva grinned around a big yawn, and stole a cookie. “You mind if I hang out?”

“Yeah, I do, because I hate being surrounded by attractive women. It’s one of my terminal hang-ups.”

She flung a pillow at me, settling back into one of the chairs across from us. “Good.
