WHEN WE ARRIVED AT Marcus’ Jeep, there was a grey pickup parked next to it. The pickup had its hood up. A young woman seemed to be studying the engine, while cradling the smallest baby I’d ever seen. The baby was barely visible in the blue blanket.

She turned to us. “Can you give me a jump. My car won’t start.”

Marcus connected the jumper cables and had her engine running in no time. She thanked him.

“What’s your baby’s name?” I asked.

“Tucker. He’s two weeks old. I couldn’t get him till today. He was born pre-mature. They kept him in the incubator. When he reached five pounds, the hospital let me take him home.” She introduced herself as Taylor, and looked like a teenager. Tucker slept peacefully in Taylor’s arms unaware of her distress.

“Are you sure you’re going to be okay to drive with him?” Marcus asked.

“My mom and dad are less than a mile down the road. I’m staying with them.” She thanked us again, placed her son in an infant seat, waved goodbye and drove away.

“Someone in her family should have come with her,” Marcus said. He put in a cassette of classical music then maneuvered his Jeep away from the hospital.

“I learned a great deal about you today, Marcus.”

He squinted and paused for a moment before responding. “You mean from your conversation with Mom?”

I nodded. “But I’m still curious about something.”

“What’s that?”

“Your relationship with Susan—how would you describe it?”

He shook his head, as if he disliked the question and didn’t want to answer. “We’ve been over this before, Carrie. Susan and I grew up together. She was a part of our family. In looking back, I realize I didn’t give her the attention and time she deserved.”

“Didn’t you enjoy spending time with her?”

“I was ambitious and selfish.”

“Do you regret marrying her?”

He shot me a stern glance. “That’s an unfair question. We did marry, but we were young. I regret we didn’t communicate as well as we should have. Mostly my fault, I can be controlling, as you know. If I’d taken the time to listen to her, she may have shared her plans to rescue Virginia, and I would have known about it. Perhaps I could have helped her. But, but I can’t change the past. Why dwell on it?”

“Do you regret asking me to marry you?”

He sighed. “Ah, Carrie, when I asked you to marry me, I had no doubt you were the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, but now I’m not in a position to make promises. And I don’t want to be unfair to you. God knows I wish I could tell Susan about us. But if she knew, she might lose hope. The truth might devastate her.” Marcus took his hand from mine to wipe his eyes. “We don’t know if her recovery is even possible. Sanders has prescribed drugs to fight the cancer. Susan is weak. It’s uncertain how she’ll respond to those drugs.” Tears leak down his cheeks.
