CHAPTER
TWELVE
I completed the paperwork and paid for the room, and then the front desk manager handed me the key cards, explained all the amenities the hotel offered, and suggested some nearby restaurants.
âThank you, sir. Youâre all set,â she said. âJust see the valet at the front to park your car.â
âWill I have access to my car at any time?â
âYes, sir, just come to the front and ask the valet at any time.â
âCan I get to the garage myself?â
âOh, yes, sir, of course. You can take the elevator down to the garage. You can get in and out with your key card. You can drive into the garage on this side of the building,â she said, pointing towards the side of the building where Iâd seen the parking garage entrance.
âPerfect. Thank you,â I smiled.
She smiled back. âEnjoy your stay, sir.â
I walked out of the hotel and up the sidewalk to my car.
The valet chased behind me. âSir, Iâll park your car for you!â
I thought to myself, Not a chance, youâre far too excited, chump. But then I thought, â¦What the heck?
I tossed the kid the key. âYou drive. Iâm riding with you.â
The kidâs face oozed excitement. I fell into the passenger seat. The kid jumped in the driver seat, fired up the car, and drove toward the parking garage entrance.
âHey kid, whatâs your name?â I asked.
âTommy,â he said.
âTommy, Iâm Orlando. You know, youâre a good driver.â
âThank you, sir.â
âYou can call me Orlando.â
Tommy nodded.
We parked and jumped out of the car. I got the key from Tommy, unlocked the trunk, and pulled my travel sack out before closing and locking the car. We took the elevator back up to the lobby, where Tommy jumped out and waved a goodbye.
âSee you later, Mr. Orlando,â he said.
I continued up in the elevator to the third floor, where my room was. My room had two levels: On the first was the living area, with a sink, microwave, television, couch, and desk, and upstairs were the bed, dresser, and bathroom. I threw the sack and then myself on the bed and lay thinking about where I should start.
It didnât take me long to decide. After resting for a while, I went down to the lobby, where I waited at the front desk for a moment until the manager looked up.
âHi again,â she said.
âHi. Whereâs the Donâs Coffee shop?â
âOh⦠the new coffee shop⦠itâs just a couple of blocks away.â She flipped a map of the area onto the countertop. âWeâre here⦠and Donâs Coffee is here.â She drew a line that curved a few times before connecting the two points.
I smiled my thanks and exited through the front entrance. The night completely coated the sky. I pushed up the sidewalk and through the crowd of shoppers, pedestrians, and tourists. Five minutes later I was inside a crowded coffee shop. Everyone was chatting, sipping drinks, and typing away on their phones. I noticed there were a couple of cameras, one focused on the front door and another aimed at the register counter.
