They parted in the hallway and reconvened in an hour, dressed and ready to go. Kyle wore his well-tailored suit like a runway model, the line of the jacket crisp across his shoulders, the trousers enhancing his legs. Gel tamed the waves of his auburn hair, and a close shave left his pale face faintly pink. He looked GQ, making Darrell feel like JC Penney.

Darrell wanted to rumple the arms of the jacket by catching hold of the man and to feel the smoothness of that cheek under his lips. Kyle would probably smell like some expensive cologne.

Instead, he presented the photo he’d taken a couple of months ago, catching Vince in one of his rare good humors, smiling about the Bulls’ latest win. Anyone looking at the photo without knowing him would think Vince was a sweet old man. They’d be dead wrong. Vince Skelton’s tongue had been as sharp as broken glass and his temper as unpredictable as Chicago weather. But he’d once been kind enough to look after his abandoned grandson and he’d been devoted to his dog, so Darrell cut him a lot of slack for being crotchety.

Kyle’s eyes glistened as he studied the portrait and his voice was rough when he spoke. “This is… Thank you.”

“You can stop thanking me for everything. I considered Vince a friend of sorts. I’d do the same for any of my friends.”

“All the same, thanks.” Kyle stepped forward, cradled Darrell’s cheek and pressed a gentle kiss to his mouth. The unexpected move left Darrell breathless as if the kiss had been much longer and deeper.

He inhaled. “I, uh, guess we should get going.”
