Present:

Russell’s on the run.

I replay that day over and over as we drive. Like I have for years.

“For what?” I choke, staring at my brother.

“We can’t talk about this. I have to go.”

“Jason! Jason, wait! Come on! What the hell is—”

“Let it go,” he hisses, whirling on me with a grim face. “Forget Russell.”

I stare at him. “Forget… he’s your best friend! He’s my—”

He’s my love, I say to myself.

He’s the man who just took my virginity.

“Yeah, look, and I know you’ve got this little crush on him, El—”

“Don’t do that,” I grit my teeth, trying not to cry.

“Let him go,” Jason mutters. “Trust me on that. Rus fucked up, bad.” He glares at me. “He’s gone, Noelle. Leave it.”

He glances outside at the sound of a car in the driveway.

“I gotta run.” He darts into the bathroom off the kitchen. I step outside, hugging myself and feeling dizzy. The car stops, and his friend Kevin steps out. One look at the look on his face when he sees me, and I’m rushing down the stairs.

“Kevin—”

“Nope, c’mon, Noelle, leave it.”

“What the hell happened?! And where the hell is Rus—”

“Noelle, c’mon. Jason doesn’t want you mixed up in this.”

“In what?!” I scream.

He swallows thickly and glances up at the house before he steps closer.

“Dude, Russell fucked up. I mean, you know he’s been hustling on the side, right?”

I blink, stunned.

Russell hates drugs. Both his parents died addicts and he’s never touched anything, even pot.

“That’s impossible. Russell would never—”

“Tell you that he’s dealing drugs? No shit, Noelle. You’re Jay’s little sister. Why the fuck would he?”

I want to throw up. Or pass out. Or both. This isn’t happening. This can’t be real—

“Well, dealings the least of his worries now.”

I swallow thickly, feeling woozy.

“What?” I manage to choke.

Kevin frowns, scratching his chin.

“Noelle, I can’t—”

“Please,” I choke. “Please just tell—”

“A kid died.”

The ground drops out under my feet.

“He sold to a kid, and the kid died. Russell is fucked, man. He’s gone, and if he’s smart, he’ll stay the fuck gone.”

My stomach knotted that day, and my heart broke. And it never got fixed. Four years, and no one else got inside. Not my heart. Not my body.

Nothing.

There hasn’t been a man since that one night. How fucking pathetic is that?

I glance out the window of the van at the passing snowy countryside. Then, I glance back at the man who wrecked me.

“Where are we going?”

He shakes his head, staring at the road ahead.

“I don’t know. Someplace safe.”

He groans and shakes his head. “Fuck,” he swears under his breath.

“Maybe you shouldn’t have kidnapped me,” I mutter.

He turns in the dark of the van and gives me a hard look.

“Believe me, I’m regretting it.”

“Oh, good,” I sass back before I turn to look out the window again.

At least he regrets something.
