“DID YOU HAVE A NICE evening?” Turner asks as he holds the car door open for me to get in.
“Yes.” I try to sound confident as I speak, but I can hear the wavering in my voice, so surely he must.
“You didn’t eat anything.”
“No, sorry. I’m not feeling too good, a bit of a sore stomach.” It’s not a lie, it started off earlier as a dull heavy feeling. I put it down to the fact I’m nervous and scared of what’s going to happen to me. But now, it’s painful and I’m not really sure what it is . . . Of course, I know or at least I’m hoping because this was a conversation I was not ready to have, yet. My period, I was due nearly three weeks ago. I wasn’t worried at first, just kept telling myself I would take it. Then, when it didn’t come I started to stress about it. But, stressing doesn’t help, so I put it to the back of my mind and forget about it, until now.
“Do we need to stop off at a shop before going home?” Turner asks, looking at me with worried eyes. If this situation wasn’t so fucked up, maybe I would laugh.
“If we could. Thank you.” I sit quietly in the car and reflect on not just this evening, but the day as a whole. It’s certainly not what I imagined it would be this morning.
We drive through the city centre and Olly stops the car outside a twenty-four-hour grocery shop. Turner exits the car, but I had expected Olly would come into the shop with me. I suppose Turner doesn’t trust me. If it was Olly with me, I would take full advantage of the situation. We wander around the shop until I find what I’m needing. Turner almost laughs when he realises what I’m in for, Tampax and some pain-killers.
“Can we get some bottled water as well?” I ask him as we stand at the checkout. He takes his wallet from his jacket.
“Next, you will be telling me you want chocolate?” I smile; one because he’s right and two because we are in public. I know better than to try to draw attention to us. When all I really want is to yell at the cashier ‘to get help.’ “Can you throw a few bars of chocolate in the bag, please,” he says to the cashier.
“Thank you.”
We leave the shop with everything I need and travel back to Turner’s home. It’s dark now and I can’t help but think what Cole is doing to get me back. If I’m honest, I’m dreading being back at Turner’s because I’m frightened of what’s going to happen to me now. He looked slightly pissed off during dinner when I refused a drink, but it didn’t last long before he was being overly nice.
I remember only too well being supplied with a cocktail of drink and drugs, and being so far out of it I didn’t comprehend what was happening to me at the time.
