Aaliyah groaned, and I imagined her snatching the phone from my VP, scowling at him, looking hot AF all riled up. She sniffed and paused before she spoke. “Aaliyah left the building and did a runner.” Her sass fired my chest with a sweet warmth, like a campfire. As much as I wanted to be angry with her and the damn mate bond, hell, even she worked her magick to soften me. “Please leave a message. Beep.”

I croaked out a laugh. “Did you just beep me?” First time for everything.

“Leave a message. Beep,” she replied, sounding a bit broken, and my jackal responded, desperate to nudge her and put his chin on her shoulder.

“Have it your way, sasshole,” I gave it back to her, using the joke to soothe her discomfort. “Nurse A, it’s me. The dark, sexy one.” She laughed at that, but I kept up her game. “My gun hasn’t been the same without you. It wants another rematch.”

Fuck. The words came out before I could catch them. Flirting with her was the last thing I should be doing, but it came naturally between us, and I’d longed for it back. Damn woman hooked her claws into me even though I stayed away. I wanted her in my bed to punish her in other ways.

“Smartass,” she shot at me. “Your gun won’t get another rematch. Ever.”

I leaned back in my chair, falling back into our pattern of working each other up and enjoying it. “Forever’s a long time, Nurse A.” Nostalgic, I set my gun on my desk, skimming my finger over the butt, remembering where it had been. Touching it made me feel closer to her even though we were miles apart and far from forgiveness or trust. “What are you up to?”

“Drinking with Zethan.” Her voice lost some of its sass. “Don’t worry your dark, sexy ass. Your VP isn’t skipping church for fun. He’s getting dirt on me.”

“Really?” I played cool, not biting, not giving her any ammo.

“You’ll be pleased to know that I had two opportunities to run and didn’t.”

“You’re fiery today, Nurse A. Tense. Hostile. I think you need a massage,” I teased, unable to help myself when I was with her. “Swing by when you get back to the club, and I’ll arrange it.” Fuck, I couldn’t believe I made that invitation. I had to shut down this conversation before it got out of hand. Set’s powers were uncontrollable, and so was my fucking mouth.

“Don’t flirt with me, Mr. Vincent.” Her voice adopted a bored tone, and I’d wake her up if she was with me, setting her over my lap, slapping her ass until she lost that spunk. “Not interested in your hot and cold game.”

Shot down. Ouch. But I didn’t give up. Once I found out which side she was on—hopefully my side—I’d have her again, mark my words.

Zethan chuckled in the background. Asshole.

“Tell my VP to go fuck himself,” I growled.

“He already is. We’re sexting at night, bish.
