CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

THEO

On my way out of the gym, I call Dad. He’ll be grabbing his second morning coffee, so I should get at least three minutes of his attention.

He answers on the first ring. “Theo? What is it?”

Hey, Dad. Doing great. Thanks for asking. “Hey. I’ve been thinking, and I . . . I think I should come forward to the police about the breakup.”

Silence on the other end. Yep. Knew this was a bad idea.

“Theo.” Dad’s voice drops so no one overhears him eviscerate me. “The matter has already been settled. Your lawyer is perfectly capable of determining what is and isn’t appropriate to say to the police right now. I am your father and an attorney. I know what’s best. So next time you think about questioning me, don’t.”

Cass’s words from the other night ring through my head. “But if they find out the truth, won’t I look guiltier?”

“They won’t find out the truth if you keep your mouth shut. You haven’t told anyone, right?”

I told Cass. But she won’t tell anyone. I know I can trust her. “Cass knows.”

Dad huffs an impatient sigh. “And who is Cass?”

“Noelle’s best friend.” He should know that.

“Oh, yes. Sinclair. Make sure she knows not to say anything. And if you have any concerns about her, let me know, and she and I will have a conversation.”

“Actually, I . . . I think I like her, Dad.”

I want to be with Cass. Really be with her, not just sneak kisses in my car after dark. I want to take her on dates, hold her hand in public, comfort each other until we manage to find Noelle and bring her home safe.

Dad lets the silence linger between us for a full twenty seconds before speaking again. “I’m only going to say this once, Theo. Do not touch, speak to, or look at another girl until Noelle is found. Your ex-girlfriend is missing, and you sincerely have no idea how bad it would look for you if the media caught you with another girl right now. I will not have your indiscretions ruining the reputation of this family. Is that clear?”

Part of me wonders if he even gives a shit about Noelle in all of this. He cares more about our reputation. How we look to the public, to the media, to a bunch of strangers. All whose opinions matter a whole lot less than finding my missing friend.

“Is that clear?” he repeats.

“Yes.” My thumb hovers over the button to end the call. “Crystal clear.”
