By mid-morning, The Majestic arrived in Newport and Jett worked with the transporter to unload her successfully from the trailer, dip her into her slip at the race marina, remove all her transport materials and assemble the tall masts in place. She looked good. Perfect, in fact. She’d survived the transport with all pieces intact. She was ready to sail tomorrow.

Sadie held a palm up to him and he slapped it, then gripped it before she could remove hers. “Sorry I wasn’t more help with the unload,” she said.

“No problem at all. Tomorrow is when I need you, and you’ll be there for that.”

She nodded. “I’ve sort of got the nervous stomach,” she confessed.

Chuckling, he released her hand. “Good. I get one before every race. Means you know how important it is, and you’re putting pressure on yourself to do well.”

He knew she understood the concept. All competitive athletes recognized the balance between the pressure they put on themselves and the need to perform unencumbered. A tricky balance, but a necessary one.

They approached the line of tables set up on the dock within the marina. The hustle bustle was palpable. Hundreds of sailors milled around, most of them accompanied by their team members, wearing their signature colors emblazoned with the name of their vessel. Snatches of nervous laughter and excited conversation caught Jett’s ear as they made their way to the registration table designated for the double-handed racers. Beautiful, graceful racing ships dotted the water behind them, each racer’s investment carefully placed down in the water and babied with love.

Sailing competitors worked their entire lives to be here. Lifetimes of practice and knowledge of the sailing sport culminated in showings like this one. Jett felt honored to be here, and competitiveness soared within him. He deserved to be here. So much was riding on his appearance, and it wasn’t limited to the Sailtone contract. Sure, he had agreed that he wouldn’t get the lucrative sponsorship contract from the sailing product giant unless he placed in the top three. But there was more.

Respect from those who knew what it took to compete at this level. Admiration for his skills and dedication. Name recognition and a synonym for quality in the sailing world. From his fellow competitors, sure. But more importantly, from one man in particular he had sought approval from, his entire life. A strict disciplinarian and a hard sell.

His father.

Why did sons always strive to seek approval from the one man who had been with them from the very beginning? Who had seen them in their best moments and their worst? Did sons think they weren’t truly successful unless their fathers gave them their stamp of approval?

What about when that father was the most highly-respected, highly-achieving man the son knew? How could a son possibly earn that father’s respect?

“Hey, what’s up with you?” Sadie’s voice interrupted his thoughts, and he shook his head to wipe out the subject that dominated them.

A nudge from his partner brought a gentle smile to his face.
